Known originally as an outdoor specialist, Mike has figured out how to keep pace in Supercross as well.
Mike Alessi was perhaps the most highly anticipated rider to come out of the amateur ranks in the past decade. Along with his brother, Jeff, and a father who aggressively pushed every aspect of their careers, Mike jumped straight into the big-bike class at the end of the 2004 outdoor season, posting third overall at Steel City. He then bumped down to the 250 class where he raced for Red Bull KTM. It has taken him several years to overcome the negative stigma gained by his boastful ‘Believe the Hype’ entrance to the pro ranks and several additional unpopular incidents.
After leaving KTM for Rockstar Makita Suzuki, Mike made the full-time switch to the 450 class. Under the watchful eye of Roger DeCoster and with input from the likes of Ricky Carmichael, Mike became the veteran leader for the yellow squad. He was consistently at the front of the pack and was one of the few men who could keep James Stewart in sight.
In 2010 Alessi took a brief detour from America's Supercross stadiums in order to prep KTM's new 350 SX-F motocrosser on the outdoor circuit. Aboard the 350 machine he managed a strong season, finishing fifth overall. In 2011 Alessi continued with KTM, this time campaigning the 2011 AMA Supercross series with numerous top-10 results and a 12th-place finish in the overall championship. His results improved dramatically outdoors, however, where he managed a total of eight fourth-place finishes to end the season fifth overall.
Alessi will be transitioning to a Suzuki for 2012 as he joins Mike Genova’s MotoConcepts team with his brother Jeff and Jake Canada.
