Nico Izzi began his riding career at the young age of three. By the time he was nine Nico had a trainer and was making his way through the amateur ranks. With over 100 titles, some of which included wins at the Loretta Lynn Air Nautiques Amateur National Championships , he had clearly developed a talent for racing. In 2007 Izzi was set to make his debut on the pro racing circuit.
Jumping into the 2007 outdoor nationals late, Nico took his Makita Suzuki to 10th overall in his first professional appearance at Millville. Shortly afterward, he backed this with strong 7-7 moto scores to hold down a top-five finish. Although his 2007 outdoor season was impressive, his achievements were overlooked due to the success of amateurs Trey Canard and Austin Stroupe.
When the 2008 SX Lites East Region series came around it became abundantly clear that Nico had spent the majority of his off-season training and developing his skills. He ended up on the podium right alongside Ryan Villopoto and Trey Canard at Indianapolis even though it was only the second Supercross of his career.
There were momentary episodes of success throughout the 2008 season, but it was mainly his consistency which made him a rarity among rookies. With a third-place overall finish in the Championship, he was once again overshadowed by his amateur rival Trey Canard. Turning to the 2008 outdoor nationals, Izzi found bitter disappointment
Nico Izzi (20) has a consistency that is rare among amateur riders. However, 2010 was a season to forget after injuries and illness severely affected his performance.
at the start of the season. This was quickly replaced, however, with celebration over his first outdoor national podium at Thunder Valley.
The rare consistency which has come to define much of Izzi’s riding style came in full force during the final round at Steel City. With a career-best finish of second overall Nico showed the racing world his true colors. He walked away from his rookie season with two top-five finishes and an AMA Rookie of the Year Award.
In 2009 Izzi rode strong through another season of SX Lites, having podium finishes in the first four rounds and taking third overall in the series.
In 2010 while racing with DNA Shred Stix Star Racing Yamaha, Izzi fractured a bone in his foot and he wasn't able to finish the season. He took 17th overall - far from his best result to date. In Motocross he struggled too, facing injuries and illness which prevented him from riding at his best.
Hoping for better luck in 2011, Izzi will be racing aboard the Honda of Troy/Kilbarger team.
