New Zealander Ben Townley is ready to put his recent streak of bad luck behind him and get back to the business of racing in the 2010 AMA Motocross Championships. The Kiwi will compete for the Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil Honda team in the 450 class.
Townley looked destined for greatness after his memorable 2007 season where he captured the AMA Supercross Lites East Region championship and won six races in the AMA Motocross Lites class racing while finishing the season in second place for the Team Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki team. His impressive resume also included a World MX2 title in 2004 and a runner-up finish in World MX1 in 2005. But after earning a factory ride when he signed with the Team Honda Red Bull Racing squad in 2008, he broke his foot in training and missed the indoor season. He then would miss the entire 2009 season as his string of injuries continued as he was plagued by both a busted shoulder and a bum wrist.
In 2010 Townley headed to Europe to compete in the FIM Wolrd MX Championship. The New Zealander never competed in the series, however. While practicing he suffered a perforated bowel after slamming hard into the handlebars, and the incident left him sidelined for six weeks. After recovering he entered the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross series and had great success throughout the 12 rounds. With several strong results, including second overall at Thunder Valley and third overall at Red Bud, Townley ended the Championship in fourth.
Townley has an impressive resume, including the '07 SX Lites East Championship and fourth in the 2010 MX series.
For 2011 Townely returned to the MX1 Championship in Europe with the Kawasaki Team CLS. The New Zealander had to endure more setbacks, however, as multiple injuries - including a broken jaw - prevented him from having a successful season.
Townley will continue to race overseas in 2012 with Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing.
