AMA Supermoto Championships at Infineon

Thursday, November 13, 2008
Mark Burkhart at Waterford
Mark Burkhart will be looking to knock off Troy Herfoss for a chance to win the Supermoto Premier title.
The XTRM AMA Supermoto National Championships will come to Infineon Raceway for the first time, Nov. 14-16. Championships will be decided in three professional categories: Supermoto Premier, Supermoto Lites and Supermoto Unlimited.

Supermoto blends on- and off-road racing on a track comprised of both pavement and dirt. A purpose-built Supermoto bike has to be able to handle high speeds on paved sections of a track, as well as negotiate large dirt and possibly steel jumps. Motorcycle displacements range from 250cc to 490cc and up, depending on classification.

The weekend will be highlighted by racing in three categories: Supermoto Premier, Supermoto Lites and Supermoto Unlimited.

Australia’s Troy Herfoss tops the Supermoto Premier class with an eight-point lead over Ohio’s Mark Burkhart (95-87). Herfoss takes a three-race win streak into the event at Sonoma.

Anaheim’s Brandon Currie has dominated the Supermoto Lites class, winning all four races in 2008. He should be favored again in Sonoma.

After starting the season with a sixth-place finish in Washington, San Clemente’s Darryl Atkins has been on fire, winning two of his last three events. He tops the standings in Supermoto Unlimited over Arizona’s Steve Drew, but only by five points (87-82).

There will be a local flavor to the weekend’s event with Fairfield’s Casey Yarrow (Supermoto Lites), Pacifica’s Dave Casey (Supermoto Lites) and Petaluma’s Tyler O’Hara (Supermoto Premier), among other local riders. Casey is the top local competitor, sitting in third place overall in Supermoto Lites. Main events will take place in all three divisions both on Saturday and Sunday.
