Ben Carlson took second place in the Supermoto Unlimited division on Saturday at Infineon Raceway during the XTRM AMA Supermoto Championship.
Michigan’s Chris Fillmore took the lead with a nifty move on lap 15 and held on to post his first win of the season on Saturday at the XTRM AMA Supermoto Championship, presented by Parts Unlimited, at the Infineon Raceway Kart Center.
Fillmore (KTM) snuck past leader Mark Burkhart (Yamaha) with two laps remaining in the 17-lap feature to take the victory in the Supermoto Premier division. The move elevated Fillmore to second place in the point standings.
The championship will be decided on Sunday at Infineon Raceway as riders return for the second half of the doubleheader weekend.
“I knew I couldn’t hold back and I had to make my move when it presented itself,” Fillmore said. “That’s exactly what I did. It was a great win.”
The race for the Supermoto Premier championship took several twists and turns on Saturday in the Sonoma Valley. Points leader Troy Herfoss stalled his KTM bike on the first lap, falling from first to 12th place. The Australian rider made a miraculous recovery, fighting all the way back to a second-place finish. Utah’s Cassidy Anderson (Honda) was third and Vacaville’s Joey Pascarella (Yamaha) was fourth.
Herfoss will take a 14-point lead over Fillmore (117-103) into Sunday’s 17-lap season finale. Burkhart, who entered Saturday’s race second in points, suffered a mechanical failure on the last lap, relegating him to an eighth-place finish. He enters Sunday in third place with 100 points.
“I just stalled the bike on that first lap,” Herfoss said. “From there I knew I had to pass a lot of people. I just left it all out there today and did all I could to get second place. We’ll see what happens on Sunday.”
In other racing Saturday, Anaheim’s Brandon Currie (Yamaha) took the checkers in the 13-lap Supermoto Lites feature, with Pacifica’s Dan Casey (Honda) posting his best effort of the year in taking second. France’s Xavier Bellerophon (Husqvarna) was third, while local rider, Casey Yarrow (Vacaville), was seventh.
“I kept looking for Brandon but he was tough; he didn’t make any mistakes today,” Casey said.
Arizona’s Steve Drew (KTM) took the win in the 13-lap feature for Supermoto Unlimited, with Wisconsin’s Ben Carlson (Aprilia) second and Bakersfield’s Josh Chisum (KTM) third.
