Airwaves Yamaha had reason to celebrate after the ninth round of the British Superbike Championship at Cadwell Park this past weekend, with riders Leon Camier and James Ellison both registering victories. British Superbike points leader Camier appeared to have the double podium victory in hand but was disqualified in Race 2, granting the win to teammate Ellison. The weekend also saw the return of Worx Crescent Suzuki’s Sylvain Guintoli, who returned to the fray after breaking his right leg in a freak accident at Donington Park back in May.

After qualifying to start in pole position for Race 1, Camier dropped back to fifth at the start of the race. Deftly making a swift move on Lap 4, the championship leader would regain the lead and continue on to first place more than seven seconds ahead of the rest of the pack, collecting his 15th win of the season.

Starting out strong and getting the hole shot was Confused.com Kawasaki’s rider Simon Andrews, but Andrews would relinquish the lead heading into the Coppice to Hydrex Honda’s Stuart Andrews. Andrews and Easton would play a game of cat and mouse for second before Easton would effectively make a pass stick and go on to capture the second podium position.

“Myself and James had a great battle,” added runner-up Easton of the pressure he had been under. “There were a couple of times when I could see the flash of blue out the corner of my eye, so I knew it was going to be a tough one. I just had to hold my lines and squeeze him in a couple of places to keep the place."

Vying for the final podium position was Andrews, Airwaves Yamaha's James Ellison, and Relentless Suzuki’s Ian Lowry. After a fierce battle, a mistake by Andrews at Charlies would advance Ellison to third and allow Lowry to bring home his best career finish to date in fourth.

Fifth and Sixth place would go to Confused.com Kawasaki’s team of Andrews and Julien Da Costa after Andrews failed to overtake Da Costa and sent both riders across the grass. HM Plant Honda’s Karl Muggeridge finished seventh.

Worx Crescent Suzuki rider Sylvain Guintoli rode a remarkable race to finish eighth after suffering a leg injury from a collision with Brookes at Donington Park in late May.

During qualifying for Cadwell, team manager Jack Valentine had this to say. “These past two days have been fantastic. Everything is going to plan; Sylvain's got faster with every session. This place is extremely technical and very narrow so you have to be careful with your learning and, as ever, Sylvain's been going about his job the right way."

Race 2:
Leon Camier bestowed the win to a surprised James Ellison in a dramatic turn of events in Race 2 at Cadwell Park when Camier was disqualified in the final lap of the race.

Officials reported seeing smoke coming from Camier’s Airwaves Yamaha and displayed the black-and-orange flag indicating he was to leave the race, but Camier continued. Race officials concluded enough warnings were presented but Camier only exited after taking the checkered flag first, consequently resulting in a disqualification.

Camier had this to say of the disqualification. “But of course I'm really disappointed about being disqualified from Race 2. I felt more comfortable on the bike, my lap times were better, and everything seemed to be going exactly to plan. Unfortunately I misinterpreted the rules; it's just one of those things. I'm really pleased for James and for Airwaves Yamaha. At least it was another double win for the team. I can't wait to get to Croft now."

Ellison, who started eighth on the grid, battled his way up to second place before being handed first in the unforeseen DNF decision. The safety car was dispatched on Lap 6, briefly bringing Ellison to within closing distance of Camier, but Camier would shoot away to finish four seconds faster than his teammate.

"I feel sorry for Leon being disqualified from the race. He has ridden superbly all season, and in particular this weekend. But I'm pleased that I managed to close the gap to him in the Championship and that the win stayed within the Airwaves Yamaha team," Ellison said after Race 2.

Stuart Easton, who proves he is adept off the line, garnered the hole shot and early lead. But Camier would chase him down just two laps later and pass Easton at Charlies to take the lead. Easton fought a fierce battle with Andrews, and with Camier’s DNF, took second, closing the gap a tad for second place in the points' standing.

Completing his best British Superbike race to date, Andrews made a satisfying comeback to a third place finish after experiencing a race-long clash with Easton. Following Andrews was teammate Julien Da Costa, Buildbase rider John Laverty and Guintoli who took home his second top-10 finish of the weekend despite competing on a track he had never raced before.

Bristish Superbike Cadwell Park Post-Race Rider Quotes

Ian Lowry - Relentless Suzuki - 4th, 19th
"We are now so, so close to running at the front on a regular basis and even though we had an issue with our starts at Cadwell, I would have to say it probably cost me a podium. No ones fault; just one of those little problems that we can iron out, but hats off to the team as they gave me a great bike with a very strong engine low down for those tight turns at Cadwell. I didn't want to make a Kamikaze move in race one but without sounding cocky - there were places that Ellison and Easton were holding me up."

Simon Andrews - Confused.com Kawasaki - 5th, 3rd
"It’s all been a bit of a surprise, really. I haven’t so much as ridden a bike for eight weeks and to come back and be this competitive is fantastic. I’m not race fit yet and my wrist is far from 100% so to end up spraying champagne was a bit of a result. We may have been gifted a podium by Camier's exclusion but that's just mystic forces at work. He was nowhere at Mallory and was gifted my win when I got punted out at the hairpin, so it evens out today."

Julien da Costa - Confused.com Kawasaki - 6th, 4th
"At last it is nice to race at a circuit I know. The circuit is very narrow and very dangerous but it suits my style. I gave it everything today and the results were good but I would still like to have finished a little higher up the order. Simon put a hard pass on me in race one, for which he apologised, but it proved to me I have to be a little harder still. Croft I also know and I am looking forward to another chance to shine brighter."
