Michael Rutter gets a nice pay day for turning the first electric 100 mph lap, taking another TT Zero victory for MotoCzysz.
Michael Rutter repeated his TT Zero-winning form in record-setting fashion. The English rider piloted the MotoCzysz E1pc electric race bike to victory with a 104.056 mph lap. John McGuinness chased Rutter during his first electric race, the 19-time TT winner placing second on the Team Mugen Shinden entry. Rutter’s MotoCzysz teammate, Mark Miller, placed third.

Winner of last year’s TT Zero, Rutter barely missed turning a 100 mph lap by 0.396 mph in 2011. This time around the 40-year-old TT veteran secured the £10,000 bounty offered by the Isle of Man government for the first rider to break the barrier. Rutter wasn’t alone crossing the ‘ton’ as McGuinness and Miller also managed triple-digit mph laps. Bob McIntyre tallied the first 100 mph lap at the IOM TT on a conventional internal combustion motorcycle in 1957.

Rutter started the electric TT first off the line and established a half-minute lead through the first checkpoint. Only five competitors took to the Mountain Course for the one-lap race. McGuinness, fresh off his first career Superstock TT victory, couldn’t close the gap on his fellow Englishman. The TT legend’s Mugen Shinden mount crossed the line 23.52 seconds slower than the winner with a 102.215 mph lap.

Following Miller on the timing was Rob Barber, who competed on an entry from the Austrian TGM IOT team. Winner of the first-ever zero emissions TT in 2009 for Team Agni (when it was dubbed the TTXGP), Barber was the only other rider to complete the race. Yoshinari Matsushita started the race for the Japanese Komatti-Mirai team, running in fourth before withdrawing from the race.
