Michael Rutter on his way to a historic eighth-race win in the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix.
Jerez SMT Honda rider and Macau Grand Prix legend Michael Rutter claimed a historic eighth-race win in the dramatic contest through the city streets of the special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China. He beat out countryman and former teammate Martin Jessopp of RidersMotorcycles.com by nearly five seconds in the 10-lap event while Ice Valley by Motorsave Trade’s Simon Andrews rounded out the podium.

Rutter was dominant throughout the weekend at Macau, notching top-times in most practice and qualifying sessions and earning pole position. Wet weather and delayed the start of the race, but once the contest was underway he continued to dominate. Fourth-place finisher Gary Johnson of Quattro Plant Motorsports pressured Rutter off the start, getting to the front briefly, but Rutter soon found his groove and claimed the lead position by the end of Lap 1.

Jessopp was tenacious though, posting some of the fastest lap times mid-race and forcing Rutter to push harder to retain his lead. The joy of winning such a demanding contest was tinged with sadness though, owing to the death of Luis Carriera during the first qualifying session.

“Firstly I must pass on my thoughts and condolences to the family and friends of Luis Carreira who we sadly lost in the first qualifying session,” said Rutter. “It marred the rest of the week but as we all know in racing we have to keep strong and carry on. It was a mixed week with accidents and also weather problems that seemed to put delays on everything. It's hard to keep focused and in the zone when session are cancelled or postponed.

“I'm over the moon to have gone into the record books again with win number eight; I really enjoy coming here and hope I can continue for a few more years yet.”
