In Thursday's practice, Relentless Suzuki's Cameron Donald became the first rider to top 131mph on the mountain course, making him the new King of the Mountain.
Cameron Donald is the fastest rider to ever turn the famed Isle of Man mountain circuit. The Australian, who rose to TT prominence with a dominating performance in 2008, is the first to crest the 131-mph threshold. The two-time TT winner hit the prestigious mark aboard his Relentless
Suzuki GSX-R1000 during the June 4th practice session.
"I can't believe the lap was so good as I was just cruising and I also got caught behind a couple of top riders who were hard to pass,” said the Donald. “The lap felt really comfortable on my GSX-R1000 and I didn't even look at the clock when I crossed the line. I'm not counting my chickens just yet, but this sets us up well for Saturday's race."
Donald began the day with a 129-mph lap from a standing start, following that with his record breaking run. The feat upstaged Donald’s teammate, Bruce Anstey, who turned a very impressive 130.129 mph lap himself.
"The Superbike is now working really well, so we're almost there,” said Anstey. “It's obviously nice to have clocked a magical 130mph lap, but I have been cruising all night and I'm not even pushing hard yet; I'm saving myself for Saturday. The team has worked hard all week and I'm relaxed and in the right frame of mind."
To put the 130 mph feat into perspective, the Relentless Suzuki duo join Isle of Man TT legend John McGuinness as the only men to ever crack the coveted 130 mark. McGuinness, a perennial favorite at the Isle and multiple TT winner, retained the title of King of the Mountain for many a year. Now it’s Donald’s turn to claim the TT scepter – at least for now.
The Suzuki pair figure to be dicing for the win in tomorrow’s Superbike TT. Stay tuned to Motorcycle USA for
