TT 3D: New Documentary on IOM TT

Tuesday, March 22, 2011
A new documentary film, TT 3D: Closer to the Edge, is set to bring one of the most exciting and dangerous forms of motorsport to the broader public. Chronicling the 2010 Isle of Man TT, TT 3D is slated to hit UK theaters, excuse us, theatres, April 22. We’re told the film is scheduled for US release, though details are unconfirmed. Keep your fingers crossed America…

Road racer Guy Martin and his fellow TT compatriots will take center stage in a new 3D documentary slated for release in the UK on April 22.

The racing spectacle that is TT takes center stage, but TT 3D also focuses on the eclectic personalities that make up the road racing paddock. The cast includes stalwart TT vets like John McGuinness, rising stars like Michael Dunlop – whose last name carries with it the prestige and expectation of his legendary father and uncle, and how could it not focus on Ian Hutchinson, who made history as the first-ever rider to sweep all five solo TTs. More than anything, however, the new film appears to be a vehicle driven by the eccentricity that is Guy Martin – winless at the TT, but beloved by the mob.

Martin has cultivated his everyman’s mechanic turns road racer persona into national stardom in the UK, making him the logical star of the show. Relatively unknown in the states, except to avid road racing fans, Martin is a likable character to be sure – think Travis Pastrana with muttonchops and an English accent so thick that tin-earned Americans will be baffled without easy-to-read subtitles.

The inherent drama and tension of road racing make it a subject begging for mainstream feature movie treatment and this documentary will be an interesting take if done right. Speaking of which, Hollywood star/emo musician Jared Leto narrates… Ewan McGregor must have had prior obligations. But never mind that, let us hope the TT doc makes it to American theaters sooner rather than later. Then we can have a look and pass judgment ourselves. For now take a peek at the official trailer teaser below.
