Bill Warner and his crew set a speed of 278.6 mph during the last day at the Texas Mile.
During a recent run at the Texas Mile, rider Bill Warner set a new speed record aboard a 1299cc turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa of 278.6 mph, eclipsing the previous record by 5.3 mph and earning his machine the status of the "World’s Fastest Streetbike."
The Texas Mile is an annual event that takes place in Goliad, Texas. A total of 76 motorcycles and 173 cars were on hand. Participants had a mile to reach peak velocity and another half mile to stop their machines.
Warner gradually built up his speed during the three days prior to taking the new record. On Saturday he posted a time of 270.7 mph, beating the old record of 261.5 mph set in March of 2010. "I gradually made changes to the bike's existing setup to maximize the acceleration in each gear, trying to utilize all of the available horsepower," said Warner. On the third and final day of the event Warner’s changes paid off, and despite limited runs the 41-year-old was the fastest.
"The entire weekend, all three days, I only was able to make five runs,” said Warner. “I usually run four or five per-day, so five passes in three days is not much time to get everything dialed in. The Texas Mile track is very smooth and wide, but there is not much room to shut down. More than once, I took a wild ride off the end of the track trying to get the bike stopped.”
In the two days leading up to breaking the record Warner made slight adjustments to his bike after each run.
Adding tremendous difficulty to the achievement was the wind which picked up during the morning of each competition.
"The wind picked up significantly after 9:30 every morning,” Warner said. “It took two runs (one on Friday and one on Saturday) to learn to stay the hell off the track when those side winds picked up. There was one gust that laid the bike over so bad I could have put a knee down, but that's not a good idea at 240 mph while trying to go straight.”
But on the final day Warner and his motorcycle settled into a groove, allowing them to rocket down the industrial airport with mind-numbing speed.
"The early-morning pass on Sunday that set the record started with my best launch ever,” Warner said. “The bike got squirrely, skidded side to side and then she finally hooked up. It felt like I was shot out of a cannon! The bike stayed perfectly vertical for the entire run. It was so smooth it felt slow, if that makes any sense. Shutdown was tough, but fun, the bike screeching, sliding and hopping off the track."
One of the many individuals impressed by Warner’s run was Broc’s Performance President, Broc Davidson. A member of the 200 club himself, Davidson has been shocked by Warner’s overall work ethic and his ability to meet goals.
"The thing that strikes me is that I didn't know Bill before this year, but he came highly recommended,” said Davidson. “With methodical, consistent, record-breaking runs, he's proven his skill to the point where I sit back in awe and wait to see the next goal het sets outs to break."
