Congrats First Time Winners
Sunday, July 26, 2009
Dovizioso had to work hard for his first-ever MotoGP win in mixed conditions at Donington Park in England, which looks set to be the last MotoGP race there for some time as next year they will go to Silverstone for the British GP.
First time. No matter what it is, one never forgets their first time. Especially when it involves winning!
How about Andrea Dovizioso winning his first career MotoGP race at Donington Park amidst utterly insane and mixed dry/wet conditions today. The youngster on the Repsol Honda pressured the G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time) Valentino Rossi into falling off and then held off late-race charges from Colin Edwards and Randy de Puniet to take his first win. No doubt the kid worked hard and endured more than could ever be expected of a second-year MotoGP rider for the win. Well done, Andrea!
I was equally impressed this previous weekend as David Kennedy, guitarist for band Angles and Airwaves
and close friend, tackled his first weekend of club racing at Willow Springs. After graduating his new-rider school Saturday, Kennedy proceeded to win the Heavyweight Novice final on Sunday against a field of much more experienced riders. The soft-spoken artist has come along was since he first took to the track just over a year ago. Like Dovizioso, Kennedy had to work for it the whole time as he came from 11th on the grid to battle for the lead in the six-lap final, showing the red-mist needed to get the win. Well done, David!
Two weekends and two first-time winners. And both deserved it!
I also joined Kennedy and road racing protégé Elena Myers
to race a 250 Ninja in the Ninja Cup. It was a hard fought race, the winner going right down to a photo finish. It was the first photo finish of my career, adding yet another first. Oh, and it was Myers' first weekend racing at Willow Springs; the young rippin' little girl managing to podium in 650 Superbike. Talk about a series of first timers…
Team Kawasaki at Willow Springs this previous weekend. (Left to right) Yours truly, Elena Myers and David Kennedy.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the next MotoUSA Magazine and Motorcycle-USA.com as we are doing a feature on Kennedy, his band and his racing weekend for our MC Life section, as well as our own 250 Ninja adventure!
