WSBK Live: Ben Spies World Champion!

Sunday, October 25, 2009
Ben Spies claimed the double at Qatar.
Ben Spies is the 2009 World Superbike Champion! In his rookie season. Amazing.
Atlas here again live from Portugal and I’m please to present to you the 2009 World Superbike Champion: Ben Spies!

With a conservative but well-earned ride in Race 2, taking fifth position to championship-rival Haga’s second place, the Texas kid is now a world champion by virtue of a final score of 462 to 456 points. Doing so in his rookie season overseas, this is a phenomenal feat for Spies considering many of the tracks he had never visited before Friday practice.

And now he’s off again, embarking on the next chapter of his career in MotoGP. In fact, he will be racing a factory Yamaha M1 GP machine in two weeks time at the final round of the series in Valencia.

For me it’s off to get some rest as tomorrow I’ll be riding all seven factory World Superbikes as well as the top two World Supersport machines. Stay tuned for an update after I ride those and check the race results and Sunday Insider for more World SBK info and rider quotes.

RESULTS
1. Michel Fabrizio (Ducati)
2. Noriyuki Haga (Ducati)
3. Johnny Rea (Honda)
4. Shane Byrne (Ducati)
5. Ben Spies (Yamaha) – World Champion!
6. Max Biaggi (Aprilia)
7. Leon Camier (Aprilia)
8. Jakub Smrz (Ducati)
9. Troy Corser (BMW)
10. Sylvian Guintoli (Suzuki)

C'mon Steve; you should know better than to headline the blog with something like that. The title appeared on the front page of MCUSA before the races were shown and completely spoiled what was a suspenseful end to a fantastic season.

And damn.... all seven factory world superbike bikes??? and some of the WSS bikes??? Sounds like a busy but amazing time! How'd you get hooked up with that deal??

Great result for Spies. It wasn't the last race Haga vs. Spies battle I had hoped to see, but the result is still the same. Although I feel bad Haga lost the championship again by such a thin margin, I would have been more disappointed to see Spies move on to Motogp with no WSBK title after comming so close.

Congratulations Ben on your world championship win, not only world champ but most races won and most pole positions record. What a day for Yamaha; Moto GP World Champion, World Supersport Champion and World Superbike Champion. Makes me want to go out and buy a new Yamaha.
