What a Supercross Season!
Monday, January 18, 2010
Your friendly scribe Steve-O here and for once I’m not writing about road racing… This time it’s
Supercross that’s got my fingers tapping the keypad.
And what a SX season it has been through the first two rounds! As reported by our man-on-the-scene Shan Moore, virtually everyone’s number one prediction
James Stewart now sits seventh in points, while proverbial pick number two
Chad Reed left Arizona with a broken hand and will surely be out for a few rounds, both as a result of the two
favorites coming together in the Phoenix main event this past Saturday.
A broken hand will more than likely negate CR from any hopes of a championship, with an uphill battle ahead for Stewart. So who’s in front now? A 450-class rookie! A rookie named Ryan Dungey. He nearly beat Stewart heads up at Anaheim 1, then followed that up by notching his first-career SX-class win this past weekend by a healthy margin.
The best part? He’s from Minnesota, the hometown of Road Test Editor Adam Waheed and I. Way to rep' for good ol’ MN Ryan!
Who would have thought the SX Series would look like this after the first two rounds? Dungey with a nine-point lead over
Ryan Villopoto, followed by a much leaner and more fit
Josh Hill a further three points back.
Now, one can’t forget Stewart has come back from a DNF to win the championship before, last year in fact, so counting him out wouldn’t be smart. Nonetheless, it’s going to force him to ride all-out and win as many races as possible, and that’s downright good entertainment. As a result, this could shape up to be one of the best SX seasons in recent memory…
I’ve got my TIVO set, that’s for sure!
