Rossi and Lorenzo Saga Continues

Wednesday, February 10, 2010
With this being the final test for the team until February these two days are especially important as they continue to develop the 2009-spec M1.Lorenzo made the most of the limited time on the track to finish third fastest.
Rossi (top) came out to the press that he would no longer be sharing data with his teammate Lorenzo (bottom) this year.
SteveO here and I recently caught a very interesting clip on MotoGP.com expressing Valentino Rossi and his teammate Jorge Lorenzo’s views on the sharing of data and bike set-up this year. Needless to say, there seems to be no love lost inside the Fiat Yamaha team. A transcript of the video goes as follows:

Rossi – “Speaking with Yamaha I think that Jorge, especially last year, demonstrated great speed. And also good attitude to fix and set(up) the bike. So now Jorge is already two years in MotoGP so everybody in the team agree that is possible (for him to) make his own way. Also Jorge want to work more on the development of the bike so everybody want him to rise to make his own bike and development alone. At the end it don’t change a lot, also, because all the comments between me and Jorge are quite similar and so is not a big change."

Lorenzo – “I don’t have anything to comment.”

No doubt Rossi was being very politically correct in his statement, but a little reading between the lines shows just how much animosity there is within the team this year - no wonder there is still a wall between the two in their pitbox.

But the burning question is: Will this help push them to the front once again, even though Lorenzo no longer has access to Rossi’s data, or cause a war that holds the team back? With two of the best riders in the world on one of the best machines in the paddock, we’d have a hard time betting against them…

Flash forward a year to the 2011 Sepang Test: http://www.Motorcycle-USA.com/791/9139/Motorcycle-Article/2011-MotoGP-Sepang-Test-Day-3.aspx Here's Lorenzo's quote post race: "Ben is doing a very good job, I spoke with him yesterday and we discussed many things about the bike, he's a good teammate." Got to love that dig. Or am I reading too much into it... Rossi vs Lorenzo rivalry great stuff!

I can't see a war developing that holds the team back - maybe Rossi withholding data could conceivably hold Lorenzo back, but I can't how it would hold Rossi back! I think Lorenzo has a great work ethic, is a supremely talented rider and will be just fine developing his own bike... I hope the two of them can battle as hard at the front as they did last year. Clearly Lorenzo is modeling himself on Rossi - helmet designs, climbing the fence, post race antics, etc. He was doing it in the 250cc class and credited Rossi as his inspiration so no surprise there - he is also working on his humility and respect for his fans... he couldn't have chosen a better mentor so I think it's unfair to criticize him for emulating Rossi. Some of Rossi's comments aside (which I think were unwise and in the heat of the moment) I think a lot of the "animosity" is media driven. They are both fierce competitors who want to win as much as draw their next breath and can be forgiven for trying to make that happen, but this isn't a soap opera, reality show - no slap fights or pouting - however much the press would love to make that seem the case.

Rob Grant, I couldn't have said it better. There's no doubt that all the other guys racing in the same field are nice guys and work hard in their sport but one that stands out from the rest is Rossi. Not just for what he has achieved which people seem to dismiss quickly and capriciously and to hold in disregard but because of what you said, he is one of a kind a greatly charismatic, extremely likable God on two wheels - a living legend. If he seizes to be competitive at the same level as he has in the past it will not deter me from this which I know, he is a motorcycle prodigy, for if we were truly fair and put all the riders that ever raced at the same youthful age I am certain at least 7 out of 10 times he would come out on top.

I love the no comments that say everything. Could Rossi be getting some hubris here? Not saying it will happen, but what a wonderful opportunity for Lorenzo to stick it to the GOAT. Especially if he starts outperforming.

Just one more thing for Jorge to cry about. He's such a cry baby and pouter. I don't blame Rossi a bit for not sharing information. Let Jorge make it on his own!

If you met Jorge you would see what a sincere and genuine chap he is.
As for the victory celebrations I believe his are individual to him and much better. He is a very likeable chap and many years younger that Rossi and much more mature.

As for the data sharing the proof of the pudding will be in the eating wait and see. Also with the reduced number of engines who knows what will happen.

I recently watched a documentry "MotoGP: Riding Secrets". It changed my opinion of Lorenzo for the better. He is a hard worker on and off track. Check it out, good video.

I personally do not like Lorenzo whatsoever. He comes across as cocky and arrogant although he it seems he has been trying to tame that down a bit recently. Moreover, what is with him trying to copy Rossi with his personal helmet designs and victory celebrations such as the one at Indy. I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but there he will never be a Valentino Rossi. He just doesn't have the intangibles that Ross has; gregarious, funny, charismatic, and extremely likable.
