2013 Dakar Rally Stage 1 Results

Stage 1 of the 2013 Dakar Rally, a prologue to the start of long-range competition in Stage 2, went to KTM rider Francisco “Chaleco” Lopez, giving him his eighth career stage win. He completed the short timed special in less than eight minutes and finished the entire trek from Lima to Pisco in 39 minutes. He was followed by Yamaha rider Frans Verhoeven in second and Chilean pilot Pablo Qintanilla close behind in third. Qintanilla’s countryman Patricio Cabrera came in fourth-fastest followed by multi-year Dakar champion Cyril Despres of Factory KTM in fifth.

Riders were faced with a 250 kilometer liaison stage and a short 13 km special. In timed competition, the top 32 riders were within one minute of Chaleco’s top time. Some other riders of note within the top 32 are Husqvarna Rally Team by Speedbrain’s Alessandro Botturi in 11th and his teammate Paulo Goncalves in 13th, Team HRC’s Helder Rodrigues in 29th and American rider Kurt Caselli in 32nd. Caselli is filling in for Dakar veteran Marc Coma on the Factory KTM effort.
