Jared Mees and Jake Johnson battling at the Hagerstown Half-Mile. Mees went on to take his first victory of the season.
Round 6 of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Flat Track Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com hit the Hagerstown Half-Mile in Maryland on Saturday with Roger’s Racing’s Jared Mees taking his first victory of the season. Zanotti Racing’s Jake Johnson came just over four seconds after Mees and Kiesow Racing’s Jeffrey Carver Jr. rounded out the podium.

Mees dominated all weekend, topping the timesheet in practice and Heat 1. Coming off pole position, Mees ran out front early and led the field to the checkers. “I got off to a decent start; I knew in the dash that Johnson would be my main competition," Mees said. "I think it's going to be him and I, neck and neck the rest of the way. I want it real bad and so does he. This is definitely one of my dream races to win, my family comes down here every time, it just feels great."

Johnson won the GNC Twins Dash for Cash event earlier in the day, coming ahead of Mees by a slim margin. In the main race, Johnson was able to keep ahead of Carver Jr. by a relatively comfortable 2.263 seconds, avoiding the battle for third raging just behind. JJ was the only active rider on the grid to have won at Hagerstown, taking the checkers in 2009. The other rider to take wins at the Maryland half-mile is Harley-Davidson’s Kenny Coolbeth, with three in total to his credit, but after suffering a broken leg at the Lima Half-Mile now sits on the inactive list as he recuperates.

Carver Jr., Scott Powersports’ Johnny Lewis and “Slammin” Sammy Halbert of South East Harley traded positions on nearly every lap in the hunt for a podium finish. Carver’s third-place finish marks his first podium in the twin engine class. "We got down to the last five laps and I just said don't give up, just kept running that line," Carver said. "Lewis and I had a great battle. Awesome to get my first podium here, it's just really great to be up here on the podium." Lewis and Halbert finished in fourth and fifth respectively.

In AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles action, Fun Mart Cycles’ Gerit Callies got out front after a red flag on Lap 3 forced a restart. Once out front, Callies could not be caught. Midwest CNC’s Adam Bushman took second and Weirbach Racing’s Ryan Wells came in second and third, both under one second off the lead. Highs Dairy Stores’ Jason Isennock came across the finish in fourth and Parkinson Brothers Racing’s Stephen Vanderkuur rounded out the top five.

Mees holds the lead in GNC Combined points ahead of Johnson who trails by 15 in second. Lewis sits in fourth with Halbert holding down fifth. Callies extended his points lead in Pro Singles over Wells to 10 points and Isennock holds steady in third.
