and Lucas Oil event at Tucson International Raceway, taking first in the GNC Expert Twins Half-Mile as he crossed the line one second ahead of Crosley Radio’s Bryan Smith. South East Harley’s Sammy Halbert rounded out the podium after almost tracking down Smith in the final lap.
Bonsey started from pole position, winning Heat 1 and the GNC Twins Dash for Cash, but the holeshot went to Zanotti Racing’s Jake Johnson. Before the end of the first lap though, Bonsey had regained the lead, which he held to the finish.
"I came out and did it in front of the Arizona fans here tonight," said Bonsey. "My first victory was in California and luckily my second one came here in front of you guys. From start to finish, I felt good the whole race and I have to thank my guys for giving me this great opportunity."
Smith soon slotted into second and remained there nearly uncontested. On the final lap though, Halbert picked up his pace and began to pressure Smith for second but was unable to move past as Smith powered down the final front-stretch. Halbert ended up finishing 0.031 back in third. Rogers Racing’s Jared Mees took fourth with Dodge Bros Racing’s Brad Baker rounding out the top five. Johnson took sixth ahead of Memphis Shades’ Robert Pearson while Foremost Insurance’s Henry Wiles finished the night in eighth.
Bonsey has had difficulty placing inside the top-10 this season in Expert Twins and currently sits 11th in overall points. Johnson continues to lead, but only by three over Halbert and four over Smith, who are second and third respectively. Mees continues to hold the lead in GNC Combined points, though Halbert is coming closer to that mark as well, now 12 points behind with one race remaining at Pomona. Johnson sits a further eight points back in third in overall Combined points.
