champion Jared Mees, the GNC title not decided until the final race of the season at Pomona.

The season opener doubleheader at the Daytona Flat Track is scheduled for March 14 -15. Halbert won the inaugural race at Daytona’s quarter-mile limestone track in 2010 and has won three of six Grand National Singles races held on the new course. Fortunately, there is a month-and-a-half break in the flat track series before the second race that will hopefully give Halbert enough time to recover so he can resume competing for the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track title. Slammin’ Sammy has been an ironman up to this point and had never missed an AMA Pro Flat Track race because of injury since joining the series full-time in 2006.

"Usually injuries are from crashes, but not this one. In the dash-for-cash, I caught my foot on the dirt berm that marks the inside of the track and twisted my knee. I won the race, but the damage was done," said Halbert in a press release posted on SammyHalbert.com. "I spent most of the off-season recovering from shoulder surgery. For this to happen now, a month before the season-opener, is such a bummer. I was hoping to start the year with a couple wins at Daytona, not sitting on the couch."

The shoulder injury he refers to was a torn labrum suffered during a crash at the Springfield Mile last year in a race held during Memorial Day weekend.
