Rod Lake Racing’s Briar Bauman opened the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track
season with a GNC Expert Singles win at Daytona International Speedway. Vans Yamaha’s Sammy Halbert scored second followed by USC Kawasaki’s Brandon Robinson in third.
Zanotti Racing’s Kenny Coolbeth Jr. got the early jump on the field, earning the holeshot but was unable to turn his early advantage to a win after two riders went down, forcing officials to red flag and restart the contest. Bauman blasted off the line in the restart, taking the holeshot and extending his lead to almost two seconds over Halbert by the checkers. The Daytona win is Bauman’s first career Grand National victory.
“I don't usually tighten up during a race but when I saw those halfway flags I definitely knew I had a chance to win and felt myself tense up a little bit," said Bauman. "I'm just glad I could hold on for the full 25 laps and get some points. That's what it's all about at Daytona is to work on points. To make it all 25 and earn the win just feels awesome."
Coolbeth Jr. held with the lead pack during the opening laps of the restart, but eight laps in the Honda pilot went down, earning a 17th-place result.
Casicoll Rush Racing’s Mike Rush finished fourth followed by Montgomeryville Cycle’s Jared Mees in fifth. Don’s Kawasaki’s Henry Wiles took sixth with Scotts Powersports’ Matt Weidman trailing in seventh.
Bauman takes the early Expert Singles points lead followed by Halbert and Robinson.

In the Pro Singles class, KTM’s Ryan Wells took a commanding victory over Jones Racing’s Justin Jones. Wilhelm Racing’s Brandon Wilhelm rounded out the podium.
Wells earned the fourth spot on the grid but blasted through the pack to earn the holeshot. He pushed ahead of the pack through subsequent laps, building a gap on Jones of more than three seconds by the checkers.
"The first day at Daytona I usually struggle quite a bit so to come out here and get the win is huge for me," said Wells. "I knew I had to have a good start and that I would be forced to make very few mistakes if I wanted to win. I'm just glad I was able to do that and it paid off. Hopefully I'll be back up here tomorrow night; the goal is to get the sweep."
