Flat Track Hagerstown Half-Mile Results 2014

Monday, July 7, 2014
Villa-Esparza Crosley Radios’ Bryan Smith notched his second GNC Expert win of the year at the Hagerstown Half-Mile, becoming the first non-Harley-Davidson rider to win at the venue since 1996. The Kawasaki ace finished eight-tenths of a second ahead of runner-up Jared Mees of Rogers Racing. Montgomeryville Cycle Center’s Jake Shoemaker earned his best result of the season so far in third.

Off the start it was Mees and Zanotti Racing’s Kenny Coolbeth Jr. battling for the front, with Coolbeth prevailing before the end of the first lap. Coolbeth would go on to pull a slight gap on the field as Smith and Mees fought for second position. Smith got ahead of Mees during the initial stages and kept Coolbeth in his sights until Lap 8 when a mechanical issue forced Coolbeth to pull off the line and into the pits.

From there Smith held steady as Mees worked to close the gap, and during the final laps Mees was absolutely hounding Smith for the front. Try as he might though, Mees was unable to make a pass stick as Smith ticked off one smooth lap after another on his way to victory.

"I never would have guessed that I would come away with a win tonight," said Smith. "I don't think any of my competitors would have picked Jared (Mees) to come away with the Lima win last weekend or myself to come away with the win tonight. These specific tracks aren't my cup of tea but I'm very fortunate that I have a great group of guys behind me and that I was able to come away with the win. It felt great. I just put my head down. I've ridden a lot of laps with Jared (Mees). We're best friends as he only lives a few miles from me. I want to thank all of the fans here at Hagerstown, they always know how to put on a first-class event."

Shoemaker had a strong showing as well, weaving up the ranks from well outside the top-10 early on for his podium finish. Close to 10 laps from the checkers Shoemaker had made it to fourth and then put the decisive move on USC Kawasaki’s Brandon Robinson, who finished in in the number four spot. Whites H-D’s Sammy Halbert took fifth followed by Ramspur Winery’s Jake Johnson in sixth and Lawrence Racing’s Doug Lawrence in seventh.

Mees now sits atop the GNC Combined points standings, one point ahead of Johnson in second. The previous leader, Coolbeth, drops to third, mathematically tied at 99 with Smith in fourth. Robinson rounds out the top-five.

Pro Singles

Parkinson Brothers Racing’s Kyle Johnson scored his third-consecutive Pro Singles win of the 2014 season at the Hagerstown Half-Mile. KTM’s Ryan Wells finished in second-place followed by TJ Burnett Farms’ Davis Fisher in third.

Wells and Fisher were immediately in contention for the lead through the opening turns, battling along with Johnny’s Vintage Motorcycle’s Jarod Vanderkooi. Johnson, meanwhile, slotted into sixth, finding his groove through the early laps before making a push for the podium.

At the front, Wells took over the lead and started to open a gap as the race reached mid-point, while Fisher and Vanderkooi battled for second-place. Fisher eventually got the upper hand and then started to close in on Wells. Behind, Johnson was making up ground, running in fourth by Lap 6. The following rotation saw Johnson move past Vanderkooi into podium position.

Johnson and Fisher reeled-in Wells during the final laps and the three riders were on top of one another just before the checkers. With two left to go Johnson got past Fisher for second and then on the final lap the Honda ace edged past Wells for the win, crossing the line two-tenths faster than the KTM rider.

"We got off to kind of a rough start, we had our work cut out for us," said Johnson. "By the time I got into third, Ryan and Davis, they were out there. I just knew I had to keep pushing myself. But man, this has got to be the best win yet because I had to work for that one."

Vanderkooi held steady in second followed by Bromley Brothers KTM Racing’s Dan Bromley in fifth. Rod Lake Racing’s Bronson Bauman took sixth followed by Arai’s Dylan Morin in seventh and Rekluse rider Ben Lowe in eighth.

Johnson win moves him to the top of the Pro Singles points list, two points ahead of Wells in second. Fisher sits third followed by Wilhelm Racing’s Brandon Wilhelm in fourth and Morin in fifth.
