The Yamaha keeps its composure as the speeds increase, and while heavier riders are going to be looking for stiffer springs, overall it is a nicely balanced package.

Unlike the Kawasaki, which is plush but bottoms hard, the Yamaha is soft enough for the small stuff, but doesn't get bent out of shape when it does reach its limits.

The WR450F is definitely at home in the woods. It took a little getting used to in the faster sections, but it's completely capable of doing well there also.

The black engine covers are a nice touch even though they get destroyed after only a few rides, but other little things like a fully encompassing skidplate, multi-function computer, most-usable headlight and snazzy LED taillight are all bonus features that really add up.

Tight, technical riding is where the 450F really shines. Not only does the tranny reflect that, but a light-steering, planted front end leads the bike right where a rider intends.

Once the points were tallied, the WR enjoys a one-point advantage in the chassis and handling category.

Waiting under the emission controls is a great bike for riders who spend time in tight situations.

The Yamaha is a great motorcycle once the restrictors come off.

Our testers didn't spend a whole lot of time riding at night, but the Yamaha seems to have the most usable headlight.

Another thing we liked was how Yamaha really put the finishing touches on its machine.
