FMF/KTM's Charlie Mullins picked-up his third win of the season at the VP Racing Fuels Big Buck GNCC
in South Carolina. Mullins beat out teammate, Kailub Russell, by a small fraction after the near three-hour event, with just over 30 seconds separating the two at the finish. Shenandoah Honda’s Thad DuVall rounded out the podium.
AmPro Yamaha’s Paul Whibley grabbed the $250 All Balls Racing XC1 Holeshot award, but quickly fell back as Mullins and Russell charged to the front. Russell gained the early advantage and led through the first three laps of competition, but Mullins was never far behind and pushed into the lead following a mid-race gas stop. Russell went down a short time after, but was able to pick up quickly and come within striking distance of Mullins as they entered the final lap.
Russell lost all hope of a win when a second crash allowed Mullins to pull his 30-second gap just before the finish.
Kailub Russell lost ground to Mullins in the Big Buck GNCC after going down in the final lap.
Maria Forsberg took her third win of the season in Women's GNCC at Big Buck.
“Kailub gave me a run for my money today,” said Mullins. “We have been close all season but today was definitely a challenge. It is great to be battling with my teammate and to have someone push me at each event. I am glad to get the win here today and add to my points lead.”
DuVall suffered a particularly hard fall in the previous round and was still recovering during the Big Buck GNCC. He settled into third-place following the first lap and remained there to the checkers. Carolina KTM’s Chris Bach made up ground through the contest, moving from 10th-place to fourth, while Whibley slipped to fifth as he continues to ride with pain from a broken hand.
Australian rider Josh Strang ended in sixth, followed by Yamaha’s Ricky Russell in seventh and Honda rider Takeshi Koikeda in eighth.
Mullins extended his points lead over Russell to 10 in XC1 and Bach maintains his position in third.
F.A.R. Husqvarna’s Andrew DeLong nabbed his third win of the season in XC2 Pro Lites competition, followed by KTM’s Grant Baylor in second and Yamaha’s Aaron Plessinger in third. DeLong remains the overall points leader in XC2, now with a 21-point advantage over Baylor.
In Women’s action, KTM’s Maria Forsberg took her third consecutive win over teammate Kacy Martinez in second. Yamaha’s Jessica Patterson rounded out the podium followed by Becca Sheets in fourth. Forsberg continues to hold the points lead in the Women’s division, but the battle remains close with Martinez just two points adrift in second and Patterson four off the lead in third-place.
