Motocross was originally known as “scrambles” and started in England where the first-ever race is thought to have been the Southern Scott Scramble, held on March 29, 1924 in Camberley. Scrambles then transferred to mainland Europe where the French shortened the overall distance, introduced jumps and renamed it moto-cross. Europe’s sanctioning body, the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) sanctioned the sport in 1947. In 1966 and ’67, American entrepreneur Edison Dye introduced top European riders to the United States, successfully importing the newest riding styles and equipment. In the decades that followed, the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) took over national and international event promotion in the US and continues managing the direction of motocross in America.
