Baldwin Captures SCORE Trophy Truck Crown

Tuesday, December 11, 2012
Score International Off-Road Racing
Racing with maturity, poise and consistency, Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin came from behind to capture the SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck season point championship for the five-race 2012 SCORE Desert Series. The final 2012 SCORE Desert Series point standings were released today by Sal Fish’s Los Angeles-based SCORE International, the world’s foremost desert racing organization.

Battling back from a rare did-not-finish in Round 2 in Laughlin after stopping to assist his father who was racing in a different truck and experienced some health issues, Baldwin, 33, won his third SCORE Trophy Truck season point championship and his first SCORE Overall point title.

Entering the season-finale at the legendary Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in third place in his class points, Baldwin drove solo brilliantly over the brutally-rugged 1,121.55-mile course down Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula, to finish fair enough ahead of Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren and Mexico’s Juan C. Lopez to add to his SCORE Trophy Truck titles as he also won in 2006 and 2008.

Starting the season with the overall win in the season-opener in Laughlin, he rebounded from his Round 2 DNF with two second-place finishes before his strong season-ending run gave him the victory margin he needed to secure the title. Driving the No. 97 Monster Energy Baldwin Motorsports Chevy Silverado, Baldwin was not only the SCORE Overall point champion, he also finished at the top of the leaderboard in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks.

MORE ENERGY
With a monster season to emulate, Baldwin stayed focused and determined as he now has five career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins in the 18-year history of SCORE’s featured racing division.

In the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 both MacCachren and Lopez were slowed by mechanical issues and Baldwin was originally announced in second place in the 45th anniversary race, but a latter protest of apparent winners Gus Vildosola and Gus Vildsola Jr. resulted in a 90-minute penalty for Vildosola Racing, giving Baldwin the historic race victory. His original finish of second itself was enough to win the point championship but the penalty gave him a little more cushion as Lopez finished 12th and MacCachren 16th in SCORE Trophy Truck in the race. Baldwin completed the season with 407 championship points.

MacCachren, who also had two race wins in 2012, ended up second in SCORE Trophy Truck with 398 points in the No. 20 Rockstar Energy MasterCraft Safety Ford F-150 with Lopez, who split the driving time in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 with NASCAR’s Robby Gordon, was third overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck with 396 points in the No. 18 Speed Energy RPM Racing Chevy Silverado.

Rockstar Rob’, who has eight SCORE season class point titles, earned his 48th career SCORE class win, his 11th career SCORE Trophy Truck race win in San Felipe in March. MacCachren is tied with Las Vegas brothers Ed and Tim Herbst with the most race win in the 18-plus year history of SCORE’s premier class.

SCORE points are based on starting, finishing, placement and number of official starters within each class.

With consistent Laughlin finishes of fourth and third along with a seventh in San Felipe before slipping to 21st in Ensenada in June and bouncing back with a fifth in the season-finale, SCORE rookie Steve Strobel, Clarks, Neb., finished fourth in SCORE Overall points and in SCORE Trophy Truck with 378 points in the No. 94 Strobel Motorsports Ford F-150.

UNLIMITED CLASS 1
Continuing to move out from the shadow of his father and his uncle’s experienced tracks, second-generation Southern California desert racer Cody Parkhouse finished fifth in SCORE overall points and won the unlimited Class 1 in a Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car. Parkhouse won his class once in 2012 and ran consistent enough the other four races in a Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheeled desert race car to earn his first SCORE season point championship with 365 points.

RPM RACING ALL OVER
The most extensive and impressive team performance in 2012 was easily the RPM Racing team out of Bristol, Tenn. with eight entries in eight classes each race, the team earned a SCORE-record 20 class wins in 2012. With Justin Matney, one of the team’s primary drivers just returning from rehabbing a bad back, team principal andregular driver Clyde Stacy along with several other drivers.

In the end, RPM Racing won four season point championships, finishing second in two classes, third in one and sixth in another. Stacy was unable to drive in the season-finale because of injuries sustained in a non-racing accident prior to the race which kept the team from winning at least one additional season title.

While Lopez was third in SCORE Trophy Truck, the RPM Racing point champions in four SCORE classes were Stacy, Bristol, Va. (Class 2 (PSD-Chevy), Eduardo Laguna, Mexicali, Mexico (Class 6, Chevy Colorado), Rodolfo Iribe, Tijuana, Mexico (Class 8, Chevy Silverado) and Jim Bunn, Bristol, Va. (Sportsman Buggy, Geiser-Chevy).

Iribe finished the season undefeated with five Class 8 wins and Laguna won four of five races in Class 6. Derek Fletcher, Abingdon, Va. (Class 4, PSD-Chevy) finished second in season points as did Stacy in Class 5-1600. Stacy had three race wins in Class 2 and two in Class 5-1600 while Bunn also had three class wins this season in capturing the Sportsman Buggy title.
With Stacy was the driver of record as well in the unlimited Class 1 where the team slipped from third to a final sixth in points even though the vehicle finished third in the season-finale. Points are only awarded if the driver of record either starts of finishes a race and Stacy was unable to participate in the event as he recovers from his injuries.

With two straight race wins after a second in the season-opening round in Class 1/2-1600, Cody Robinson, El Centro, Calif., ended up 14th in SCORE overall and earned his first SCORE point title by winning his class with 343 points in a Romo-VW.
Besides RPM Racing’s Iribe the only other racer who won his respective class in all five races in 2012 to lead his class point standings was veteran Donald Moss, Sacramento Calif. (Class 3, Ford Bronco). Moss now has earned 10 SCORE season point championships, all in Class 3 and all since 2002.

FIVE THREE-TIMERS
While RPM Racing’s Laguna (Class 6) was the only racer to win four of the five SCORE Desert Series races this year, besides RPM’s Stacy (Class 2), five other racers won their class three times out of five races in 2012 to win their respective class point titles: Kevin Carr, San Diego (Class 5, unlimited VW Baja Bug), Andy Bell, Long Beach California (Stock Mini, Toyota Tacoma), Elias Hanna, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 7SX, Ford Ranger), Billy Wilson/Wes Bevly IV, Corpus Christi, Texas (Class 7-2, BajaLite-Chevy and West Bevly III, Corpus Christi, Texas (Stock Full, Ford F-150).

Besides Robinson (Class 1-2/1600), the other four-wheel vehicle class point champs with two class wins this season were Canada’s Erich Reisen (Class 5-1600, VW Baja Bug), Otoniel Huerta, San Luis, Ariz. (SCORE Lites, Curry-VW) and Dan Chamlee, Carpenteria, Calif. (Class 7, Ford Ranger).

RPM Racing’s Matney (co-driver in Class 8) and Stacy each have now earned five SCORE season class point championships with Chamlee picking up his eighth while Mexico’s Eric Solorzano earned his 11th SCORE season title in Class 11 for VW Sedans. Carr and Mike Shaffer, Oakland, Calif. (Class 4, Custom-Chevy) both now have four SCORE season class crowns.

THREE SEASON CROWNS
Besides Baldwin, also picking up a third career class season wins were Hanna and Mike Lawrence, Sunset Beach, Calif. (Class 10, Chenowth-Chevy).

Besides RPM Racing’s Bunn, the other top Sportsman class point champion, who had two race wins was Randy Swink, Calif. (SPT Truck, Ford Ranger).

MOTORCYCLES & ATVs
With motorcycles and ATVs racing in the three SCORE Baja races, the 2012 overall motorcycle and Class 40 (riders over 40 years old) point champion was the team led by veteran Jeff Kaplan, Thousand Oaks, Calif., who picked up his 12th career SCORE class win on a Honda CRF450X. Kaplan and his team along with Class 50 champion Marc Prince, Malibu, Calif. (Honda CRF450X) and Class 30 champ Mike Johnson, El Paso, Texas (Honda CRF450X) were the only motorcycle or ATV racers who went undefeated for the season.

Johnson won Class 30 for the fourth consecutive year.

Winning Class 22 (open class) for the second consecutive year following a huge win in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 was the JCR Honda team led by Colton Udall, San Clemente, Calif. on a Honda CRF450X.

The Overall ATV and Class 24 point champion with two race wins was the team lead by Mexico’s Rafael Torres on a Honda TRX450R. His margin of victory was just two points.

Class 25 ATV point champion with two race wins was the team led by Josh Frederick, Moapa, Nev., who rode a Can-Am DS-450 for his second career Class 25 title and first since 2005.

Among the other pro motorcycle class point were teams led by Francisco Septien, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 21, Honda CRF450X) and Canada’s Al Perrett (Class 60, Honda CRF450X). It was Septien’s third consecutive season point title and Richard Jackson, one of Perrett’s co-riders, picked up his 12th career SCORE season class crown.

The top Sportsman 2-wheel point champion the team led by Carlos Sanchez, Chula Vista, Calif. (SPT M/C>450cc, Husaberg 450).

MANUFACTURER’S MUSCLE
In the manufacturer’s battle, Toyo Tires (B.J. Baldwin) won the SCORE Overall season point championship for just the second time (2009-Robby Gordon), Jimco won the SCORE Original Buggy Chassis points and Kroyer Racing Engines won the 2012 SCORE Engine Builder point title.

MORE AWARDS
In addition to season class point championships, the racers also competed for part of the nearly $400,000 in cash purse and contingency postings each race. Drivers in the Pro car and truck classes also attempted to earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season. Being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 27th consecutive year, a total of 16 drivers qualified for the awards for the five-race 2012 SCORE Desert Series.

Racers also competed for the annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards, including the MasterCraft Safety SCORE Rookie of the Year award. All categories, except Engine Builder and Original Buggy Chassis Manufacturer, are determined by public on-line voting while Engine and Buggy awards were determined by season points.
