Taking his first season win at home De Dycker moved up to fourth in the Championship while Musquin won a wet MX2 Grand Prix to build on his Championship lead.

Nilsson wrapped up the World Cup win yesterday already but carried on winning the second moto today for a dominant overall win ahead of Van Grinsven and Engdahl.

Nagl and Cairoli completed the MX1 podium while Belgians Roelants and Verbruggen were second and third overall in MX2.

MX1

Despite crashing in yesterday’s qualifying Teka Suzuki World MX1 De Dycker remained positive and started off the Grand Prix with a strong win in the opening moto. The Belgian passed countryman Desalle after a couple of laps and carried on to win with a big advantage over the LS Motors man. The final heat was harder for De Dycker but he soldiered on to finish third and grasp his first season’s win at home, moving up to fourth in the Championship as well.

Ken de Dycker took the overall MX1 win for Suzuki with a 1-3.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Nagl was second overall, mounting again on the podium in Lommel after last year’s third place finish. Nagl won the final moto but struggled in the first heat after a bad start – he finished sixth eventually.

Championship leader Cairoli turned a bad weekend into a good one, as he secured the podium despite a disastrous qualifying yesterday and lost just two points from runner up Nagl. Cairoli took two bad starts in the heats but recovered to fifth and second in each moto.

Ramon was fourth overall at his comeback race after he injured his neck at Valkenswaard. The overall result, including a third place finish from heat one, showed the Belgian is ready for a strong finale to the 2009 season.

Being the third home rider in the top five, Desalle was fifth overall as a second moto crash at the first corner damaged his pipe – after a noise control Desalle was given a one minute penalty and dropped down to ninth.

Aprilia Racing’s Priem ended eighth overall despite two good starts to the heats. The Belgian ended right ahead of defending Champion Philippaerts, who had a bad day.

Strijbos, coming back this weekend despite another crash last week hampered his right shoulder, was ninth in heat one but had to pull out of heat two due to a technical issue.

MX2

Musquin made a superb comeback to the GP scene by taking victories in both Belgian motos, winning his first GP on the sand since he is racing in the World series. The Frenchman of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing went on to win both heats with a large advantage, as he even made to cross the finish line with an 18 seconds lead in the second moto.

Musquin made KTM proud doing the double.
Roelants took the second spot on the overall podium, with the Belgian taking the honour of becoming the highest placed home rider in a hard fought GP. KTM Factory Junior MX2’s Roelants was stuck in third in moto one with damaged goggles but in the final heat he stormed to a well deserved second.

LS Motors Honda’s Verbruggen grasped his maiden podium at home. The former European Champion took fifth in heat one and added a strong third place finish in moto two to leave Goncalves outside the podium by just one point.

The Portuguese was second in heat one but he ended a tough final heat in eighth, dropping down to fourth overall. The main consolation for Goncalves was his move up to second in the Championship, right ahead of previous runner up Paulin.

An incredible Roczen took fifth overall courtesy of two strong recoveries – the young German started from 35th after he damaged the bike in a qualifying tangle. Suzuki fellow rider Jorgensen was a surprising sixth.

Kawasaki fellow riders Paulin and Frossard had a tough weekend as they ended 14th and 35th respectively – Frossard actually had two dnf.

VETERANS

Despite having been crowned World Cup winner yesterday already, Swedish Nilsson went on to take his fourth consecutive moto win, mounting on the top step of the podium for the second consecutive round. Van Grinsven ended second overall courtesy of two runner up finishes while Engdahl completed the podium as he finished third twice.

With Nilsson securing the World Cup victory at the end of the 2009 FIM Veterans’ World Cup, Lhertiteau ended second despite a tough Belgian round – he finished 11th overall. Injured Iven was third in the Cup but he could not defend the number one plate as he injured himself ahead of the penultimate round in Latvia.

MX1 Rider Quotes

Ken De Dycker - Suzuki - 1st
"This is a hard Grand Prix so for sure I am really happy to win. I have not had many good GPs this season so it is nice to finally enjoy one. The first moto was decent but the second was not perfect Overall of course this is the result that we wanted and with three races to go I want to get in the top three of the championship. I think it is possible if I keep giving my best all the times right until, the end."

Max Nagl - KTM - 2nd
“It was a good result for me. It’s just a pity that in the first race I missed the start because the sand was very soft and my rear wheel went into the ground too much. If you don’t get a strong start then you struggle to get your rhythm. Then I managed to get the holeshot in the second race and it was much better. I quickly got into a good rhythm and it wasn’t raining so the track was drying out a bit. Also Stefan Everts (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Team Boss) advised me not to push too hard in the first laps but instead to save my strength for the second half of the race. I was in front for most of the time in the first half of the race then I managed to pull away and it was easy to ride and to go on and win.”

Tony Cairoli - Yamaha - 3rd
"I am satisfied because this is only my second sandy race with the 450. I made a mistake on Saturday and after two average starts today I had to push really hard. I could pass Max and David on the last lap of the first moto and that was some important points for the championship. Max was really fast in the second race and I could not catch him. Motos can be decided in the last ten minutes on tracks like these and I knew my physical condition was good; Max was just a bit too far away."

Steve Ramon - Suzuki - 4th
"I started well in the first race and was riding pretty good. De Dycker and Desalle were fast and pulled away so I rode at my own pace. I tried to push but was making mistakes and by the end third was OK for me. I made some positions at the start of the second moto but after a while it became hard out there. Again I was making mistakes, felt a bit tired and wasn't concentrating at times. There were many ruts and the rain made it slippery. I am a little bit disappointed because I wanted the podium and I knew it was possible. Still, I did my best and will look forward to the next one."

Clement Desalle - Honda - 5th
“The first race was good and I took my first GP holeshot. I was happy with the result because I came through the moto safely and with good speed. In the second moto I was second in the first corner but then I lost the back of the bike. I recovered fast but then had a problem with the exhaust, which was really frustrating. I had a one minute penalty and that set me back; there is not much you can do!”

Josh Coppins - Yamaha - 6th
"My riding was OK today. We made a bit of a mistake with the settings for the first race and when the rain came down I struggled with the bigger fuel tank and used a lot of energy to ride around and finish fourth. It was a lot of effort and things did not feel as easy as they should have. There was not much I could have done at the start of the second moto when Desalle crashed in front of me. I stood the bike up and slowed down but then someone hit me from behind and I went to ground. It was unfortunate and it is a tough track to come from last position! Fifth overall means that it was not the best day, but alright considering. I am now looking forward to the next couple of GPs."

Tanel Leok - Yamaha - 7th
"It was a tough GP for me. I did not ride well in the first laps of the first moto and the speed eventually came but I made a hard job for myself. The second race was much better but started badly when Coppins crashed in front of me. I made decent positions after that but ran off the track towards the end and lost time getting the bike back across the fence."

David Philippaerts - Yamaha - 9th
"It was a bad day. In the first moto my lap-times were consistent but on the last lap I had a break of concentration and Nagl and Cairoli passed me and I had a stupid crash. The second race was harder and I could not find a good feeling. I was sitting down a lot on the bike and found the bumps hard to deal with. I used a lot of energy to finish the race and overall it was just difficult. I spend six months of the year here training a lot on this circuit so I should have been strong for this GP; it is hard to understand why it did not work out. I like Lierop and also Loket, which is next, and I hope I can repeat my win of last year there."

MX2 Rider Quotes

Marvin Musquin - KTM - 1st
"I missed one GP but I came back strong and I am very satisfied with my result. My training has been going very well lately and my bike and the suspension are perfect. Even though this is a very bumpy track I had no problems with the bike and for this I would like to thank my team and their great support. Now I have signed my contract (with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) for the next two years so I am very concentrated and relaxed. Maybe this result today has something to do with the bike."

Joel Roelants - KTM - 2nd
"It's great to be on the podium although I did expect to do well here at home. I tried hard to catch Rui in the first moto but I didn't manage it. Then in the second I tried to catch Marvin because I really wanted to win but he was just too fast. I am now going to concentrate of having a good result at Loket and I will try to beat Marvin when we race again on sand at Lierop."

Dennis Verbruggen - Honda - 3rd
“This was a little unexpected but I have been working hard for the last few months and kept believing in myself. I knew I could be good in the sand and I am really happy. The team put so many hours into my bike and I had good people around me giving support. Now I will keep on working and hope to be on the podium again soon.”

Rui Goncalves - KTM - 4nd
"Five minutes into the race I got the stomach cramps and after that I really struggled. I had no power and I was riding on the limit the whole time. I had to get rid of my goggles in the first lap and it was very tough going."
