In the opening day of the 2010 Motocross des Nations Italy’s Antonio Cairoli secured the top time in qualifying ahead of Australia’s Brett Metcalfe. With a time of 26:29.965, Cairoli led the field by more than six seconds on Saturday, and secured his country at the top of the MX1 class. Gautier Paulin of France qualified in third with his time of 26:36.744, while Team USA’s Ryan Dungey finished just outside of the top-three with a time that was close to 10 seconds behind Cairoli’s.

In the MX2 class it was USA’s Trey Canard who came out on top with a final time of 24:45.677 to secure the leading position. Germany’s Ken Roczen was second and turned the fastest individual lap of the session. Belgium rider Jeremy van Horebeek took the third-fastest time aboard his Kawasaki, followed by Portugal’s Zach Osborne and France’s Marvin Musquin in fourth and fifth, respectively. Dean Wilson only finished seven laps before pulling off.

In the MX3/Open division, local rider Andrew Short topped the time charts on his Red Bull Honda. Shorty used his knowledge of the track and altitude conditions to lay down the fastest lap during qualifying. New Zealand’s Ben Townley was nine seconds behind at the checkers on his Lucas Oil TLD Honda. Kyle Regal made it a CRF450R sweep in third, proving that the riders who contest the AMA series have an advantage. Germany’s Max Nagl, Belgium’s Clement Desalle and Antonio Balbi followed.

Andrew Short has his starts dialed and led the Open division in qualifying.

Team USA qualified in the first position with two points after tossing out Dungey's fourth place in the MX1 class. Germany collected six points with Roczen' second and Nagl's fourth. Next is the "Puerto Rican" team of Regal, Zach Osborne, and Christian Ruis with seven points. Belgium, France and Italy follow just behind in that order. Team Ireland just missed out for the main race in 20th place and will go to the B-Final to gun for the last position in the main event. Tomorrow's racing kicks of with the B-Final at 11 a.m. followed by the three main motos beginning at 1:08 p.m.
