2009 AMA National Enduro Schedule

Wednesday, October 29, 2008
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) announced today the 2009 schedule for the AMA National Enduro Championship Series. In addition to two new venues, this year's schedule welcomes the historic Alligator Enduro back to the national calendar.

"We're very excited about the 2009 schedule," said AMA Off-Road Director Chuck Weir. "We worked very closely with the National Enduro Promoters Group to put together a program that offers our racers and fans variety, exposure and, of course, the challenging terrain and great riding that they demand."

This year's championship will begin on Jan. 25 in the Manchester State Forest near Wedgefield, S.C. The 10-round championship will culminate on Oct. 4 in Upland, Ind.

One highlight is the return of the famed Alligator Enduro to the National Enduro Championship Series. Although the Alligator Enduro has long been an AMA Sports-sanctioned event, in recent years it has not been a national. For 2009, the historic event will once again help crown the national enduro class champions. The 2009 Alligator Enduro takes place on March 5 off Tomoka Farms Rd., just south of International Speedway Blvd. in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Not sure this will post so I will keep it short. I rode the Stone Mt. Enduro from 1970 to 1977. One year the Penton guys were on a number right behide me. I recall being in a tight woods section and Jack and Tom came up behind me and was shouting, it was a very tight trail and I was going to pull over asap. They couldn't wait they blasted through the thick brush and blew around me and I was a good rider, finished 3rd open A that year. They were fast. But I did manage to catch back up to John in the rock garden and pass him but 2 minutes later he came by like a wild man. This was about 74 or 75.
JOE KERR -LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN ENDURO TOMBSTONE  March 30, 2010 11:58 AM
i just finished making a Tombstone. The words on the Tombstone read ''The Lookout Mountain Enduro crossed here Lookout Mountain Enduro - 1967 - 1989 .'' The Tombstone is located on the Williams Spring Trail . The idea came from the sign that is on Interstate 40 10 miles west of Oklahoma City . That sign reads ''The Chishlom Trail Crossed here 1867 - 1989 . It is strange to me that the Chislom Trail existed Exactly 100 years before the Lookout Mountain Enduro . The Lookout Mountain Enduro was the last Enduro to be held in the northern Part of Georgia .

I feel that the stories of my childhood are helping to generate interest in the sport of Enduro riding . Any Enduro rider would love to live in an area where an Enduro took place . I feel lucky that I lived in an area where an Enduro took place . The memories of the Stone Mountain and Lookout Mountain Enduro's were beautiful . People in the Villinow Georgia area still talk about that attractive woman that frequented the Enduro from 1967 to 1976 . I don't know her name . She worked at the Checkpoint that was located at the foot of Horn Mountain in the 1974 Stone Mountain Enduro . In 1976 she said that her Father started riding the '' Stone Mountain Enduro '' in 1958 .

I love to share my stories about living in the Country where the '' Stone Mountain '' and '' Lookout Mountain '' Enduro's were held . I lived at the end of a Dead End Road near the foot of Lookout Mountain . A Enduro Trail started at the end of the Road . Some of the riders would stop at the house that I lived in . We would give the riders Water , Cola , and food . It was like an Enduro every Weekend ! I used to sit on a Couch on our front porch and watch the riders charge past my house . The riders were mounted on High Powered Trail Racing Motorcycles .In future years I hope to see Websites that feature the History Making Enduro's such as as the Lonesome Pine , Stone Mountain and Little Harpeth .

The fun loving people of far Northwestern Georgia are thankful to the Motorcycle racers from from East Atlanta for 23 years of fun and excitement . From the first Lookout and Stone Mountain Enduro's in 1966 to the last Lookout mountain Enduro in 1989 . Those 23 years were fantastic. Any Enduro rider would love to visit that magical place . A rider could visit the Gordon County Chirt Pit . That is the hill climb that was featured in ''Cycle News and the National Magazines . 7 miles west on Ga, Hwy 136 is the town called Villinow . A rider can stop there and find some local resident that likes to talk about Enduro's . 20 mi9les west of Vilinow is Lookout Mountain . A rider can stop at Eddies Stop on Lula Lake Road , Shorty Moores Mountain top Store on Hwy 157 , or Bea's Grocery on hwy . 136 . People talk about Enduro's frequently at those said locations . It was 23 years of fun and I hope that Enduro's become as popular as they once were !
joe kerr -history making enduro's  December 28, 2009 01:20 PM
The first weekend in March of 1979 was one to remember . On that memorable weekend the '' Stone Mountain National Enduro '' took place . There was 8 inches of Rain that fell on the Saturday before the race took place . A group of Cave explorers got stuck in a Cave on Pigeon Mountain . The National News Crews were there . The Cavers were rescued . Pigeon Mountain is located in the area that the Enduro took place . The Enduro was a survival run . Over 700 riders entered the race . Many of them did not finish . I finished 4th place in the 175 class . There are no more exciteing weekends in far Northwestern Georgia anymore . It is now just a typical location in rural Appalachia . The only thing the residents do now is hunt Coons Cook illeagal speed and fight Chickens . The residents are thankful that those East Atlanta Motorcycle racers helped to make it an interesting place ,

According to those 1973 ''Alligator Enduro '' Jacket Patches The Alligator Enduro began in 1949 . That is 17 years before I saw that Enduro that took place on Lookout Mountain . - That is amazing to me . I used to read about that famous rider named Al Eames . I saw him at the 1977 ''Stone Mountain Enduro .'' I always wanted to visit him and ride some of those trails that he made . - It never did happen . 17 years later in 1994 he died .
joe kerr -history making enduro's  December 9, 2009 12:54 PM
the second Sunday in Febuary in the year 1969 was a weekend that changed the history of Southeastern Enduro's . On that memorable weekend the 4th Annual Lookout Mountain Enduro took place . ABOUT 400 RIDERS entered the race . It was the most yet . I used to live where the unplanned and one time Spectator point took place . What I am talking about is that on the Saturday before the Race 7 inches of Rain fell and the Valley at the foot of Lookout Mountain looked like The Tennessee River . The paved road 11 miles out was 1 to two feet deep in water . A large crowd gathered to watch the Enduro contestants cross the water . The backward Mountain Residents of the area did not know what was going on . One contestant acidentley drove off in to the ditch and his Bike was totally submerged in Water . The next day the Enduro was the main thing that the Students at the local School talked about ! I would like to find the guy that was driving a Honda Scrambler that was wearing Orange Coveralls . I doubt that I will ever find him . I helped him start his after it drowned out .
joe kerr -old enduro's  December 3, 2009 12:17 PM
I used to live where that Newspaper article that was printed in the SETRA newsletter - the one that was in 1990 . It was called the Chattanooga Enduro - Roughest Yet . The article was about the 1970 '' Lookout Mountain Enduro '' . The temprature was 6 degrees that morning and there was a three inch snow cover on the ground . I RODE THAT Enduro ON A TINY 50CC Bronco Motorcycle . That next night 3 to 4 inches of Snow fell and I did not have to go to School the next day . When School was opoened the Enduro was the talk of the day . It is awful that there are so few ENDURO'S . If THERE WAS THERE WOULD BE Schools that were like the School that I went to that was located at the foot of Lookout Mountain . I wish that there were more Enduro's and MORE Schools LIKE THE ONE THAT WAS LOCATED AT THE FOOT OF lOOKOUT Mountain . It is obvious that there are Many Schools where Enduro's were never mentioned .
Joe Kerr -sponsering enduro's  November 16, 2009 02:28 PM
I have been riding in and helping people host enduro's for over 40 year now . I would like to give people that are planing on hosting enduro's in the future some advice . First always have a local civic orginization help the Motorcycle Club co = host the Eenduro Second have the sponsering club conduct a vote . Have the local residents vote to see if they want an enduro in their comunity . If the majority does not want the enduro do not try to host one in that area . I hope to see Enduro's get as popular as they once were . I am one person that will do every thing that I can to help .
joe kerr -vintage enduro's  November 11, 2009 12:09 PM
The Magazine article about the ''Lonesome Pine Enduro '' was fantastic . The Lonesome Pine was the Mac Daddy Enduro of it's time . I am not sure what a Mac Daddy is . The Lonesome Pine was the most spectacular and the most popular Enduro in the Golden years . More people talked about that said Enduro than any other . Any Eastern Enduro rider would love to visit the area where that History Making Enduro took place .
joe kerr -old enduros  October 30, 2009 11:56 AM
There are not as many enduro's as there once was . Problems with the unjust landowner liability laws are the reason . The riders must stick together and try to get those unjust laws abolished . I hope to see it happen . I used to live where the Stone Mountain and Lookout Mountain Enduro took place . I lived at the end of a dead end road at the foot of Lookout Mountain in the late 1960's and the early 1970's . An Enduro trail started at the end of that Road . Every weekend it was like an enduro . In 1972 and 1973 Students at the High School that I attended used to talk about Enduro's every day . If the riders start to stick together Enduro's will come back and there will start to be places where Enduro's are popular again .
joe kerr -litle harpeth enduro  October 22, 2009 11:40 AM
I read the article about the Little Harpeth Enduro . After reading it my mind drifted back to the year 1975 . I rode in that Enduro . That Mud hole that was in those pictures was bad . I can remember the first time the Little Harpeth Enduro was held back n 1971 . The Little Harpeth Enduro was held 150 miles Northwest of the site the Lookout Mountain and Stone Mountain Enduro's were held . The Little Harpeth Enduro was fantastic and it helped to change the course of History of the Southern Enduro's for the better.
joe kerr -history making enduro's  October 21, 2009 10:07 AM
I read the write that appeared on the Internet up about the Sandy Lane Enduro . I hope to visit that area and explore the area where the Enduro was held . A website that is like that one could be written about the Stone Mountain Enduro . Land marks like the Gordon County Chert Pit and how to find it could be included . It is the Strip mine where the infamous Hill Climbs took place . There were write ups that appeared in '' Cycle News '' and several National Magazines about those hill climbs . There is the General Stores that are located at Villinow Georgia where the Gas Stops took place . There is a Villinow resident named Joe that Frequents the Store . He likes to chat about Enduro's . He has loved in both the Lookout Mountain and Villinow areas . The Power Line on Taylor Ridge could be shown . The Taylor Ridge section was not in the original 75 Mile Dalton - Stone Mountain Enduro . Many people cannot figure out how the Endiro could have been 75 Miles long without that said section .
joe kerr -history making enduros  October 19, 2009 01:28 PM
I love to share the stories about the Stone Mountain and Lookout Mountain Enduros with younger Enduro riders . The stories and the write ups that are on the internet are helping to generate interest in the sport . Many people are amazed at the fact that there were Enduros held in 1955 . The people that I talk to find it to be amazing that I lived where an Enduro took place in 1966 . Walker and Whitfield Counties in far Northwestern Georgia were much more interesting to me than the other parts of Appalachia that I lived in and visited . It was those Motorcycle Racers that were from Atlanta and Chattanooga that helped to make it the interesting place that it was .
Joe Kerr -History Making enduro's  October 16, 2009 10:14 AM
The memories of the Stone Mountain and Lookout Mountain Enduro's were Beautiful . I can remember when those Motorcycle Racers from East Atlanta first started coming to Rural Whitfield county and Walker county to lay out Motorcycle trails . They made trails in the woods where the local residents used to make Moonshine Whiskey and strip stolen cars . It was unusual for a person to live where a Motorcycle Enduro took place in 1966 . According to my calculations there were only six Enduro's in the Southeast in 1966 .
Joe Kerr -history making enduro's l  October 14, 2009 12:49 PM
The excellent write ups that concern the old history making Enduro's are helping to generate some interest in the sport .For years there was only one Enduro in Georgia , Now there are three . Any Southeastern Enduro rider would love to explore the Country where the ''Stone Mountain National '' and '' The lookout Mountain '' Enduro were held . A website that showed maps of where those historic enduro's took place would be a dream come true for many others and myself . It could help to solve the age old mystery about the 75 mile Stone mountain National enduro . ''I can't figure out how that Enduro could have been 75 miles long . The curiosity is driving me crazy .'' - Those statements are often made
JOE KERR -HISTORY MAKING ENDUROS  October 12, 2009 02:02 PM
The website that concerns the Grennhorn Enduro is excellent . I got a copy of that map that had the race course on it and I explored the country where the enduro was held . The same thing could be done about the Stone Mountain Enduro . Maps could be made that show where the 75 and 100 mile enduro took place . Many others and myself feel that it is amazing that I lived where an Enduro took place in 1966 . I have maps that show where the 100 mile ''Stone Mountain National Enduro '' and the '' Lookout Mountain Enduro ''took place . The 75 mile ''Stone ''Mountain National Enduro '' remain a Mystery .
joe Kerr -history making enduros  October 9, 2009 10:46 AM
Those Magazine articles that are about the History making Stone Mountain Enduro are excellent . There are articles about other History making enduro's such as the Greenhorn AND Jack Pine but there does not seem to be much about the Stone Mountain Enduro . According to my calculations The Stone Mountain Enduro was moved to Dalton Georgia in 1967 . I had once thought that it was 1965 or 1866 but the magazine article says that the 1966 Stone Mountain Enduro was held in Atlanta . I first visited the Enduro in 1969 . It was said to be 75 miles long . I do not see how it could have been 75 miles long due to the fact that the entire run was held east of Highway 201 . If this is true The Lookout Mountain Enduro was held before the Dalton - Stone Mountain Enduro .
joe kerr -enduro's from the glory years  October 7, 2009 02:17 PM
THE WRITE UPS THAT CONCERN THE STONE MOUNTAIN ENDURO ARE FANTASTIC . kEEP UP THE GOOD WORK . iT IS AMAZING TO MANY PEOPLE THAT ENDUROS WERE HELD IN 1957 . The enduro schedules in this day and time are pitiful as compared to the ones 30 or 40 years ago .- According to my calculations North Carolinia has one enduro . Tennessee has one enduro . I CANNOT SEE WHERE Kentucky or Virginia has an enduro . Those old write ups are helping to enthuse the younger riders . iF SOMETHING IS NOT DONE THERE WILL BE NO ENDURO'S 20 OR 30 YEARS FROM NOW . iT IS UNJUST LANDOWNER LIABILITY LAWS THAT KILLED ENDUROS .
JOE KERR -STONE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL ENDURO  September 24, 2009 02:28 PM
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME WRITE UPS THAT CONCERN THE PRESTIGIOUS '' Stone Mountain National Enduro 'T he event was held in Atlanta Georgia and Dalton Georgia . It was said that it was the best enduro ever .
