Kyle Chisholm - 2011 Las Vegas Monster Energy Cup
Privateer Kyle Chisholm nabbed his first victory at Bercy Supercross while taking the crown from Justin Barcia.
Kyle Chisholm secured status as King of 2011 Bercy Supercross during the 29th edition of the French contest. Landing podium finishes in each of the three main events, the 23-year-old overhauled some of the biggest names at the international venue which included Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac and defending champ, Justin Barcia. The overall podium was rounded out by Tomac who earned 1-2-5 scores during the three-night battle, and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer.

Friday

The competition kicked off with Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Gregory Aranda adding $1000 to his wallet after getting the holeshot ahead of MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi. Despite Aranda’s good jump on the pack, however, he was caught-up in a first-turn pile up along with Barcia, who had to pull out early after damaging his front wheel. Meanwhile Tomac had to start from the second row after having some tough luck in the elimination races, but the 18-year-old benefitted from the first-turn mash up to quickly take the lead.

In the end the 15-lap main was dominated by Tomac, who quickly replaced Barcia as the favorite to take the King of Bercy title. Chisholm also showed signs of supremacy by making up ground on Tomac near the end of the night, eventually finishing second. Weimer, who set the boards ablaze during practice, nabbed third to start the weekend after having to charge through the field from a second-row start. The top-five finishers were rounded out by Alessi and Nick Wey.

Saturday

After taking DNFs in the first race both Barcia and Aranda were due for some impressive results in the second main. Much to their chagrin though the pair were met by more disappointment as an innocent crash by Aranda during the second elimination race led to some horseplay and unsportsmanlike actions on behalf of Barcia.

After winning his heat Barcia was on good footing for the night and had a good start within the top-five. Aranda and Alessi also nailed their starts and were into the first turn along with Bam Bam, but while exiting Aranda was too hard on the gas and launched his Kawasaki directly into the path of Barcia and Weimer. After being taken out Barcia was visibly upset about the matter, and when the Frenchman was on the brink of lapping him the Wild Child squared him up in a corner and refused to let him pass while flashing the finger. The pair then pulled off to the mechanics area where they had to be separated. In the end Barcia was slapped with a fine and unsportsmanlike behavior, then suspended from the main.

When the gates dropped on the main it was Alessi out of the barrel first ahead of Chisholm, Weimer and Tomac as Wey rallied back from a poor start. Determined to improve upon his second-place finish in the first match, Chisholm stalked Alessi and eventually caught the Suzuki rider in the tunnels. During a heated fight for the lead Alessi crashed into some hay bales, with Weimer also taking a hard digger that forced him to call it quits. When the 15 laps were up it was Chisholm
Geico Hondas Justin Barcia couldnt hold off Dean Wilson through the whoops and had to settle for second in Toronto.
Fireworks went off between Justin Barcia (above) and Gregory Aranda (below) during an elimination race on Saturday.

Sunday

The final day of competition in France pitted Tomac and Chisholm against each other. In what turned into a classic battle between factory rider and privateer, it was all or nothing for the duo as whoever crossed the line first would take the crown.

Chisholm chose an unpopular gate pick on the inside of the second row instead of opting for the front. However unpopular the pick was, it paid major dividends for Chisholm as he managed to shoot through the field on the inside during the start of the main. Meanwhile, Tomac was left battling the field mid-pack as Barcia snagged the lead and began checking out. While Barcia was entirely absent from the first two nights, he made up for it with a determined ride in the final moto. Weimer held on to second for the duration of the race as Chisholm flew by Alessi for the last spot on the box.

While Barcia saved his victory for late in the game, the ultimate celebration was in Chisholm’s corner. Tomac eventually finished fifth in the final race, giving him second overall ahead of Weimer.
