Factory FMF/KTM rider Taylor Robert claimed the overall win at the inaugural Sturgis Buffalo Run and round five of the OMA National Series.
The Sturgis Buffalo Run is a unique stop for the OMA National Series, held the weekend before the start of the renowned Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The event adopted a motocross-like format in that rider’s raced two, one-hour and fifteen minute motos to combine finishes and select the overall winner. The untraditional off-road format made the racing more intense for the two separate races with a forty-five minute break in between.
In the first moto, Robert was fourth off the start heading into the grass track. Within three corners he was able to pass fellow KTM riders Jason Thomas and Jimmy Jarrett to take-over second. As he went up into the tight tree section, Robert set his sights on the lead rider of Paul Whibley. After exiting the woods, Robert made an impressive pass on the grass track to gain the lead. Robert continued to pull away from the field and crossed the finish line in first with a one minute and two second lead.
In the second moto, Robert found himself in a similar starting position as the first race, but was able to get into second behind Whibley much sooner. With a mistake by Whibley in the woods section, Robert was able to take-over the early lead. Robert continued to lead the remainder of the one-hour and fifteen minute race to eventually secure the moto win and the overall for the day.
“The two moto format and the fast pace course layout really suited me today,” remarked Robert at the end of second moto. “The grass track sections reminded me of an ISDE special test and this race was perfect for ISDE preparation and bike set-up. Overall, it was a really cool event and great course.”
