Victory for Cervantes.
KTM factory rider Ivan Cervantes celebrated yet another victory in Madrid in the final round of the Indoor Enduro World Championship at the weekend to seal the title.
Fellow KTM rider Taddy Blazusiak finished second overall for a great weekend for the sports motorcycles “Made in Austria”.
Victory for Cervantes, who won all three rounds of the indoor championship, was doubly sweet in front of his home crowd in Madrid and signals that the Spaniard is in top form ahead of the World Enduro World Championship, where he rides for the KTM factory team in the E3 this season.
Second place for Blazusiak
Blazusiak, who specialises in the extreme events, finished a creditable second. Taddy blasted off in the first race in Madrid, taking a convincing holeshot but some technical difficulties saw him slip back through the order to finish in eventual seventh. But while the skilful Polish rider made a strong start in race two and even finished six seconds ahead of Cervantes in second place, the title was already decided in favour of the Spaniard.
Wheel on wheel battle in final race
The gritty Blazusiak, well known for his do or die racing culture, went out with all guns blazing in the final race. He and Cervantes battled it out for two exciting laps in a performance that thrilled the large crowd in Madrid. The two KTM riders were wheel on wheel at the first turn and there was barely a bike lap between them coming out of the second lap. The Pole continued to fight and succeeded in taking the final race of the day even though it was clear that Cervantes had already bagged the title.
Taddy congratulates Ivan
In a display of good sportsmanship, Taddy was still quick to congratulate his KTM team-mate for riding well in all rounds of the Indoor Championship. “Although I am disappointed not to have won the IEWC championship I’m happy for him,” he said, adding “my performances were much stronger at the end of the series. I’ll be back next year to try and win.”
While Ivan now switches his attention to the preparations for the outdoor season, with the first GP set for Portugal on March 21 and 22, Taddy will contest the extreme events, starting with Hell’s Gate next weekend where he will be hoping to retain the title he won last year in Italy.
