Bayliss to Test Ducati MotoGP Bike

Thursday, May 07, 2009
When Troy Bayliss left racing last year as the reigning World Superbike champion and clearly one of the most talented riders on the planet, doubts circulated about whether the Australian would remain retired. Now Bayliss is back in the saddle as a test rider aboard the Ducati Desmosedici GP9.
Troy Bayliss scored more championship points in one race than Cardoso and was just one shy of Ellison - Valencia
The last time Troy Bayliss was riding for the Ducati MotoGP effort was memorable to say the least - the Australian celebrated his 2006 World Superbike title by winning the MotoGP season finale at Valencia in a dominating flag-to-flag victory as a wild-card entry.

The 2008 SBK champ will ride the Ducati MotoGP mount at the Mugello circuit May 12-14, joining Italian marque’s long-time test rider Vittoriano Guareschi. And it appears that Bayliss’ services will be put to use beyond the initial test, with Ducati PR announcing:

“The test [Mugello] has been planned for a while and will be repeated during the year at future official sessions of the Test Team. Ducati can thus count on the feedback of a three times world champion, whose talent and experience will contribute to the continuous development work carried out on the Desmosedici GP9 and GP10.”

Until the May 12th, Ducatisti will have to be satisfied with Bayliss’ attendance at the upcoming World Superbike round at Monza - but as a spectator, not a participant.

As for the MotoGP gig, will there be more than just testing in the future for Bayliss? The last time Bayliss turned laps on the Desmosedici he embarrassed the Grand Prix paddock by dominating the 2006 MotoGP finale with a flag-to-flag win as a wild-card entry. Oddly enough, Bayliss was subbing for the injured Sete Gibernau...  Racing fans won’t forget the apparent retirement of Gibernau after the 2006 season, with the Spaniard eventually returning to Grand Prix in 2009 aboard a satellite Ducati – but not before brief stints in 2008 as a Desmosedici test pilot.

I think with the displacement drop and Ducati's new traction control system that the Desmo now favors the younger riders who came up riding the 125 and 250 GP's. The satellite Ducs have never really been competitive even when they were 990 yet Kallio has shown some potential. Melandri and now Hayden have had/are having a hard time on the 800's because they both seem to favor a bike that's a little loose in the rear and more unstable. Melandri has already shown a resurgence on what is essentially a satellite Kawasaki and doing better than Hopper did on the factory bike. Stoner is just the perfect rider for the 800 Duc, he and the bike just mesh better than anyone else and I doubt Bayliss' lap times will be as good as Stoner's.
thewall -uhhh....Hayden is no back marker  May 7, 2009 04:52 PM
Let's see. Hayden road the first race with a bad chest injury. Gets taken out in the second race, no fault of his, and more injury on top of the chest injury. It's not like he's had a chance to prove himself yet. At this point with great riders like Melandrie, Capirossi, and now Hayden getting no where on the Ducati, I blame Ducati and not them. Stoner is unique to be able to ride it. And maybe his bike is not the same as theirs. Maybe the tuner for the 2nd Ducati ride stinks. None the less, I'd love to see Bayliss on a Ducati in MotoGP but not at Hayden's expense.

Maybe Ducati shoud just fire Hayden and give the retired Bayliss the ride for the rest of the season..his results should be far better than those of Hayden who is being used as a back marker these days.
