Eslick held off a final charge from Kawasaki s Jamie Hacking in the second Daytona SportBike race - Fontana
Rossmeyer/RMR Buell’s Danny Eslick continues his Fontana winning streak, just edging out Jamie Hacking in Sunday's Daytona SportBike race.
Wet weather may have hindered the lap times during Sunday Daytona SportBike race at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, but it couldn't stop Rossmeyer/RMR Buell’s Danny Eslick from taking the Race 2 checkers. Eslick finished the 21-lap race less than one tenth of a second ahead of runner-up, Kawasaki ZX-6R rider Jamie Hacking. M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Jason DiSalvo claimed the final podium position aboard his GSX-R, nipping teammate and Race 1 podium finisher, Martin Cardenas, at the line.

Eslick, who dominated yesterday’s SportBike race, led Erion Honda’s Jake Zemke in the early laps, followed by Yamaha’s Josh Herrin and Hacking. Meanwhile Cardenas and DiSalvo occupied the 5-6 spots.

A yellow flag slowed things down, but with the green out on Lap 6 Eslick was back up front. Zemke maintained second, while Cardenas moved into third on Lap 9 and Herrin moving into that position on Lap 10.

The Honda-riding Zemke began to fade in the middle laps, however, just as it looked like Eslick was pulling away. Jamie Hacking began his charge up the ranks to find second and try to track down the leader.

At the 2/3 mark Hacking was cutting the gap by tenths every lap and with five to go Hacking was 0.622 down. On the final lap the difference was less than two tenths, but Eslick managed to fend off the former Supersport champ by a mere 0.099 at the line. Meanwhile, DiSalvo had managed to overtake teammate Cardenas by an even slimmer 0.031 for the final rostrum position.

Herrin finished fifth, ahead of Zemke who went from Eslick’s closest rival at the outset to nine seconds behind at the finish. Aprilia’s Chaz Davies was seventh, making it six different manufacturers in the top seven Daytona SportBike spots.

Eslick is riding a two-race winning streak in Daytona SportBike - Fontana
Eslick is riding a two-race winning streak in Daytona SportBike - Fontana

Danny Eslick - Rossmeyers/RMR Buell - 1st:
"It feels good to be back up here again. It wasn't as easy today as it was yesterday, not that yesterday was easy, but Jamie (Hacking) had the pressure on me. I was waiting on a sneak move but it never quite happened. The Bruce Rossmeyer's/RMR Geico Powersports Buell 1125R really stuck in there today."

Jamie Hacking - Monster Energy Attack Kawasaki - 2nd:
"We went out with a new setting that we hadn't ridden on. It took me awhile at the beginning to figure out what the bike was doing, which is why I fell back a little bit, but once I got settled in I managed to put in some good laps and managed to catch Danny. I was thinking about everything I could possibly do. The ZX-6R ran as well as it could but it just didn't have it today."

Jason DiSalvo - M4 Suzuki - 3rd:
"Both of the M4 Suzukis were really strong today and Martin and I made our way through the pack of guys. I just couldn't get going at the start of the race and fell quite a ways back. I was way back there and they had a gap, so I had to get through there and work my way back. By the time I got there and got back up to the pack, I saw three laps to go and I had three guys in front of me and I figured I had to get one guy each lap.

"Martin and I came off the last corner and it was M4 Suzuki versus M4 Suzuki. I just tried to set him up and get as a good a drive as I could coming off the last turn. We made the draft work today. My M4 Suzuki had what it took coming to the line."

Lightningknight - Buell in the AMA.  June 26, 2009 07:39 PM
Before you open your mouths and pop off. Why don't you go online and read the AMA rules for the Daytona sport bike class. Once you under stand the rules then and only then you will understand why it is set up the way it is. So, go out and get your education.. Then come back and speak your minds once you know what the rules are.

The dude's dragging his knee in the grass! Danny rode the sh@t out of that Buell and deserves kudos for it.
David - 1125r  March 28, 2009 10:41 PM

Ron - Buells  March 26, 2009 06:39 AM
The guy saying that the harleys are multi vavle in drag racing, well the buells run a two vavle head and the v-rods had to change the motor to qualify for the nhra rules they even added weight but the v-rods were still victorous, It is great to see a American built and owned company like Buell winning in AMA. And speaking of 70s technoligy look at flat track dominated by Harley do you remember when honda dumped alot of cash into flat track and they still couldn't hang!So you Jap lovers keep feeding them rice and check out the resale value of your rice eater, somebody has to buy those things.
Openminded - Buell's Win  March 25, 2009 02:21 AM
The "stuff" falling off the Buell at Daytona was an aftermarket fairing. That does not reflect on Buell's build quality. Chances are their build quality exceeds any Japanese bike. I know their customer service and support does.
Jester - Buell... blech  March 24, 2009 10:04 PM
I for sure didn't mean to take anything away from Danny's wins, it's just too bad he did it on a Buell. Also, in response to Motorpsych, the Buell's poor build quality has always been common knowledge. At Daytona, there was all kinds of stuff falling off of them. I, too am a form over function guy, but you can have both. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so stick to your guns. I just don't agree. And, although I do love anything Aprilia, I still don't think that running 1000cc twins with 600's is right. However, including the Triumph 675 is great. Overall, the new AMA series' are sadly a joke. And even if I was interested, I could never even see a race before knowing the results for over a week, so what is the point.
Dean - Buell's win  March 23, 2009 08:02 PM
How come Barnes finished 14th on his Buell...
Edburger - Buell's win fair???  March 23, 2009 12:33 PM
Motorpsych said- “The Buell makes up for it in the corners. It probably is the superior handling bike.” Wrong, very wrong! Jamie Hacking set the fastest lap time and was beating the Buell in all the time splits but would lose ground on the straight a ways. Hacking even said he got Zero draft off of the Buell; then again not many bikes would get a draft off a bike with 88% more displacement. Dave said- “The facts are that Buell won playing by the rules. The other manufacturers are also allowed to make a bike with 1125 cc but they don't” Wrong, very wrong! Ducati builds a bike with 1098cc and 1198cc v-twin sport bike BUT neither of those bikes can race in Daytona sport bike class. Why??? To all you Buell lovers: get a clue, when the Japanese built v-twin sport bikes like the Honda RC-51 and Suzuki TL1000r they played with the big boys and fair rules and were very competitive. It really doesn’t matter if Buell wins races or championships because most educated sport bike riders and consumers will see the Buell for what it is: a good street bike and nothing more.
Dave - Buells win  March 23, 2009 12:06 PM
The facts are that Buell won playing by the rules. The other manufacturers are also alowed to make a bike with 1125 ccs but they don't, they won't and who gives a rats but if they do. The rules are made to make the racing competitive. There are now 6 makes of bikes in the races. You have to love it.
Bill Marin - Last-Straw -Buell  March 23, 2009 10:15 AM
It was the last-straw for me,I was there at Autoclub speedway Ca. (Sat) to see D. Eslick win, but com'on can you say rule bender Buell! I'll be sending my AMA membership card back, til the rules of fair play are re-established. Now Buell should stepup too the liter class with a 2000cc bike.
Dragbike - AMA Prostar all over...  March 23, 2009 09:35 AM
Isn't this exactly what happened in Drag Racing? Hardly came in with deep pockets, got larger displacement / multi-valve rules for V-twins in drag racing. (While every had to use late 70's technology. Two valves per cylinder and lower displacement.)Now it's the Harley nationals...
Brian - ...  March 23, 2009 07:07 AM
Looks like the race on Sunday sell on Monday is working on you Motorpsych. Hope you enjoy the ride.
Motorpsych - Buell's win  March 22, 2009 09:34 PM
Hacking coming within less than a tenth of a second of the winning Buell should tell you that it's not about cc's and top end. The Buell makes up for it in the corners. It probably is the superior handling bike. And I'm wondering what I'd be reading here if the Aprilia 1000 would have won on Sat. I'm sorry Jester thinks the 1125R is ugly. I'm a function-over-form guy, so that's where I think the 1125R is beautiful. Well-made as they are, it's so hard to tell one Japanese sport bike from the other. The 1125R is a breath of fresh air. I've had a GSX-R and a ZX, but tomorrow I'm test riding an 1125R.
Jester - Buell's win  March 22, 2009 04:23 PM
A Buell with almost twice the capacity of the six hundreds finally wins a race. Come on Eric, stick to road bike. When it such an imbalance of rules, you have to wonder it's even worth it. Plus, Man, that 1125R is UGLY even in race trim.
