2006 Diamond Lake Dualsport 200
Another invitation for a dualsport event gave us the perfect opportunity to run our HP2 again through Oregon's breathtaking scenery.
MotoUSA was the odd couple with the ultra-expensive HP2 and our photographer’s chase bike, a well-worn CR250R; the only 2-stroke on the entire ride.
The Diamond Lake Dualsport 200 was a BYOG (bring your own gas) affair, but the MRA had made arrangements to transport the cans to Union Creek for a midday refueling.
Travis Taylor waddles back to his steed after gorging on the MRA-provided lunch. The Union Creek campground was a perfect resting spot by combining easy access with a rustic setting and the all-important facilities.
How is it that Brian Peterson and his bright-ass gear seem to wind up in every group shot? It’s a mystery.
This was a welcome site for a bunch of famished dualsport riders.
Union Creek and the surrounding area is full of awesome riding.
This is the kind of BBQ that only a group of 41 riders can justify. The only regret we have is not being able to take leftovers in our packs.
The infamous Jeff Moffet sneaks back to his van after checking to see if Hilde had survived the first half. Once again we proved our worth to ye of little faith.
After muscling that heavy BMW through 50 miles of trail, JC zeroed in on the lunch table with Jedi efficiency.
MRA rider Randall Wilkes takes his turn at Checkpoint 3. He sure was going slowly, but an early departure from the 2x6 left him with no points.
JC survey’s the damage from little trail incident. With $20K worth of machinery, you tend to be a little paranoid about crashing.
The aftermath of my failed balance beam attempt. Sorry guys.
One of the gravel sections of our ride. We only traversed about 20 miles of improved roads throughout the day. That’s a pretty small figure for a dualsport ride.
MotoUSA’s newest dualsport weapon of choice: the 2006 BMW HP2. This bike is an incredible machine.
Dave Eaton gets a hand patching his Husaberg’s front tube from Randall Wilkes.
This little lake was only a few miles away from the D-Lake Resort. The righteous snowmobile trail leading here and the stunning weather let us know right away that this was going to be a sweet day of riding.
With the smell of rotting fish seeping from the depths of Diamond Lake, we embarked on a 120-mile voyage of dream-worthy snowmobile, quad and motorcycle trails.
JC prepares to assault the trails with the 92-hp churned out by our HP2 test bike. This bike rewards smooth riding since an aggressive approach spends more time spinning the rear wheel than driving forward.
The tight, wooded confines of Prospect OHV’s Minnehaha trail are seemingly delivered from the enduro Gods above. Thankfully that 4-foot diameter tree had been notched or it would have made for an interesting log crossing on the BMW.
