Harley Creating AHDRA Draggin' Bagger Class

Harley-Davidson Draggin Bagger with new 120R Screamin Eagle race engine.
Harley-Davidson announced it is creating a new Draggin' Bagger Class for the 2011 AHDRA season which will showcase its new Screamin' Eagle 120R V-Twin.
Harley-Davidson announced the creation of a new Draggin’ Bagger Class for the 2011 racing season. The new drag racing class is centered on the introduction of its Screamin’ Eagle 120R engine, a 120 cubic-inch V-Twin capable of putting a claimed 135 horsepower and 137 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheel with a little help from a high-flow throttle body and injectors in addition to tuned intake and exhaust systems.

The new class is for 1999-and-up Harley-Davidson touring motorcycles equipped with the 120R engine. Other performance modifications are limited to “ensure low entry cost and a high level of competition.” The touring Harleys in the Draggin’ Bagger Class must run with an original frame, fairings, saddlebags and other bodywork. Externally, Harley wants the bikes to appear as close to stock as possible, but limited modifications will be allowed to the brakes, suspension, transmission and a few other components.

“This is Harley-Davidson’s first time in several decades to offer a crate racing motor and we’re excited to work with AHDRA to launch this new racing class to support the Screamin’ Eagle 120R engine,” said Tony Nicosia, Category Manager for Screamin’ Eagle Parts & Accessories in the official press release. “Together we’ve created a class that allows even a novice team to enjoy affordable racing. We anticipate strong participation and some exciting action during the 2011 racing season.”

Harley-Davidson’s Sceramin’ Eagle 120R engine is being assembled at H-D’s Pilgrim Road Powertrain Operations Plant in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and was originally designed for off-road racing use. The new 120R powerplant comes at a retail price of $5495.95. More information about one of the most powerful V-Twins to come out of The Motor Company will soon be available in the 2011 Screamin’ Eagle Pro Racing Parts Catalog.

In conjunction with release of the news of its new Draggin’ Bagger Class, Harley-Davidson also announced it is pleased to continue its long-standing sponsorship of the All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA). The Draggin’ Bagger class will make its debut at the AHRDA Screamin’ Eagle Bike Week Nationals in Orlando, Florida on March 4-6, 2011.

“AHDRA is proud to continue carrying the Screamin’ Eagle banner to the racing community, and we are excited to finally let the cat out of the bag on the 120R. This engine makes a great package when paired with a Harley-Davidson Touring bike that will economically put its rider in the saddle of a wheelie popping, 10-second racing machine,” said AHDRA’s Craig Tharpe in the announcement.

Teams and riders interested in finding out ADHRA class rules can visit ahdra.com for more information.

Even if you could get the bagger's weight down to 750 lbs wet (unlikely).
Even if the rider was a pro and weighed only 150 lbs in full gear.
Even if the motor actually put 135 HP to the rear wheel.

You'd be lucky to run 11.teens. Tens is a lofty goal on a Harley Bagger.

How do I know?

This is also why they don't open the classes up to other American bikes.

Note to Harley. . . you're not fooling anyone with this series. Also, you don't need to go through this charade, your customers don't place much importance on performance, if they did they wouldn't be in the market for a cruiser in the first place.

Metrics drool???? What are you, a junior high girl? lmao Harleys racing Harleys is as exciting as watching paint dry. I guaranty that if I sunk the money that a 120R costs into my Victory Cross Roads...I'd smoke your HD like a cheap cigar. Oh and CHATO...where ever your sheepskin got printed, tell them you want your money back. I've never seen a PhD write so poorly. What college and degree was that anyway...MMI? lol Since you have a PhD, here's a philosophical question for you...In a race, there is only one winner...so, if a race is composed of all Harley's, wouldn't that make all the other Harley riders and bikes losers? If 10 bikes race, then wouldn't it be fair to say that 9 out of 10 Harleys that raced lost? lol Food for thought.

This class is really restricted to HD so the big four cannot compete even if they wanted, but doubt they would waste time or MONEY. It is like expecting Ferrari to build a tractor for a new Nurburg ring class. Come on dude.
Go out and have fun! It is like racing against your spare wheel, you really cant loose now can you?

On the positive side: this class should be quite entertaining and challenging for the rider to achive those 10 sec times. Impressive!

Kymco needs to establish a spec class.

Well good luck proving it since Harley is so dead set on seeing it's engine win that it's willing to exclude all other competition from racing against it. Much like the Harley XR1200 Race Series this is a marketing gimmick that makes a farce of true competitive motor sports.

Now that would be a noncompetetive joke. Just try a 120R against a yamaha Roadstar Silverado, honda Furby or Interstate, keawasaki Nomad, or a suzuki Intruder 1400 or Bulevard 1500.
Come on now, those metrics would be toast well before the 1/8th mile.

HD rules, metrics drool.
Matt -Dr. CHATO  December 19, 2010 09:33 AM
Well I don't think most will have the chance to since the AHDRA has restricted all other bikes from competing. I think that is what most are having a good chuckle over.
CHATO -MECHANIC  December 19, 2010 06:13 AM
...those of you who laugh now, we see who gets last laugh. I myself own both Metric and Two Harley's. I work on my own stuff. Harley has had some ruff times with the emissions control folks, but beleive you me, it can be done. Until you beat one of these new 120R installed engines on the Track. I would suggest to keep your laughs to yourself.

Roth.E -Sounds familiar  December 18, 2010 08:20 AM
Didn't Harley try to do something similar for flat track racing? Too Funny.
alan sharp -topcat2002  December 18, 2010 08:14 AM
its the only bike it will beat is another harley? lets have v twin bag er racing or are they scared..............
Niki -There is a reason why....  December 18, 2010 08:06 AM
There is a reason why the only professional drag racers using Harley engines are primarily sponsored by Harley. And why those engines are the Porshe V-twin (Used in the V-Rod). If you're so inclined to throw a ton more $$$ into a Harley to make it track worthy I think logically the least you can do is save yourself a few thousand and get a V-Rod.
Motor2191 -It's fine!  December 18, 2010 06:11 AM
Ok, ok... We ALL know that HDs are not really designed to be "racing machines". Let them have their fun and stop "bagging" on them. See, I made a pun! LOL! :-)
Ron -Couch racing.  December 17, 2010 11:09 PM
Whatever... booring.
Devil Machine -a new low in the racing world  December 17, 2010 06:31 PM
so, are they going to start printing 1/4 mile time slips in MINUTES E.T. now? they HAVE to limit the class to only Harleys because anything else over 250ccs would kill them. seriously, a poorly running AMC pacer would outrun these things.
Tim -???  December 17, 2010 06:03 PM
I'm confused, If they are trying to promote "low cost" & a "high level of competition" then why would they exclude other brands from competing as well? If Harley is worried about keeping the bikes in an even class couldn't they just use restrictors or something on the other bike?
GB -LOL!!  December 17, 2010 05:18 PM
harley only racing harley!!! that is so friggin funny.
