BMW Boxer 90th Anniversary bike
BMW Motorrad is celebrating 90 years in the biz with the release of an air-cooled, Boxer-powered motorcycle many believe is the BMW Roadster.
BMW released a sketch of a new Boxer-powered motorcycle it will be manufacturing by next year to celebrate “90 years of BMW Motorrad.” The model is believed to be the BMW Roadster that has popped up in spy photos over the summer.

The announcement was made by BMW Motorrad President Stephan Schaller at the EICMA show in Milan. At the center of the project is a horizontally opposed, air-cooled two-cylinder Boxer engine with a longitudinally mounted crankshaft. The motorcycle will reflect BMW’s signature cues established by the first boxer-powered BMW, the 1923 R 32, and will “bear the genes from 9 decades.” We’re hoping the suspected BMW Roadster will be a power cruiser in the vein of Ducati’s Diavel.

“The new, distinctive motorcycle to come out next year will express the genes of 90 years of BMW Motorrad combined with emotional styling and innovative technology to create a new, multifaceted vehicle concept,” stated BMW's press announcement.

While little besides the engine configuration is known for certain, based on the image BMW provided with the press release, the new BMW Boxer motorcycle has elements of a modern café racer, from the cut-outs of the tank to its speed hump. Though we’re as anxious as everybody else to know more, we’ll have to wait until BMW announces the bike’s name and launches its marketing campaign at an unspecified “later stage.”

The sketch doesn't look like a power cruiser, and I hope it is not. As you say later, this and the spy shots look more like a cross between a Monster and a cafe racer. Now that would be cool!
