BMW Sales Continue to Rise Through Q1 2013

Friday, April 12, 2013
Following its best sales year ever in 2012, BMW Motorrad continues to set records, marking its best ever first quarter numbers globally and achieving a 7.6% increase in motorcycle sales in the United States for the month of March.

Over the first three months of 2013 BMW delivered 24,732 motorcycles throughout the world, an increase of 1.5% over the same time period in 2012. For March alone, the propeller brand moved 13,067 motorcycles, a 6.3% gain over the same month in 2012.

In the U.S., sales rose 7.6% in March with a total of 1525 units sold. F-Series machines, such as the F800GT and ST models were some of the most successful, up 65% over the previous year’s numbers for the month. The S1000R HP4 and C650 GT maxi-scooter also contributed the improved figures. Over the first quarter BMW has marked a 4.9% improvement in business in the States over the same period in 2012.

At the end of 2012, BMW sold Husqvarna to Pierer Industrie AG and restructured to focus solely on the BMW brand alone. Some of that plan was recently revealed in the announcement of BMWs partnership with TVS Motor Company to produce motorcycles in the under 500cc segment. Small displacement mounts are the mainstay of the high-volume Asian market, most notably India and China. Development of smaller BMW bikes could also target the rising interest in entry-level mounts in the US, as well as the tiered licensing of established markets in Europe.
