BMW Motorrad enjoyed its best second quarter ever in 2013.
BMW Motorrad has released its second quarter report and things are looking very good for the propeller brand. During the second quarter of 2013, BMW
sold a record-breaking 34,816 units world-wide, up 15.5% over the same period in 2012. Through the first six months of 2013 BMW has delivered 64,941 total units, marking the best second quarter and six-month sales records in the brand’s 90-year history.
Sales throughout Europe make up the bulk of BMW’s success, with 39,952 sales made through June 30, 2013. Growth was marked in Germany (+2.9%), Great Britain (+4.3%), and France (+0.2%). Sales slowed somewhat in Italy and Spain, down 6.0% and 2.8%, respectively. Losses in Europe were offset by success in the United States (+16.6% 8101 units), Brazil (+8.3% 3611 units) and Japan (+35.6% 1795 units).
Production for the second quarter was up, as was production for the six-month period reported. 68,452 units rolled off the lines, an increase of 3% over the first half of 2012. Revenues were up (+15.9%) as well and workforce size was down (-9.3%), compared to the same period in the previous year.
Dr. Fredrich Eichiner, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Finance, offered this reflection on the Motorrad’s successes during a conference call report posted by BMW Group on August 1, 2013.
“In its anniversary year, BMW Motorrad reported the best quarterly and half-year sales in its 90-year history. The segment’s strong sales growth was generated by new models: Together, the new F800GT, special anniversary models and the new R1200GS
beat the overall downward market trend.
“The growth at BMW Motorrad in the first half of the year mainly came from the US, Brazil and Japan. But BMW Motorrad also made gains in its primary market of Germany and other Western European countries.
“Second-quarter revenues climbed to 475 million euros, with an EBIT of 46 million euros for the same period.
“BMW Motorrad’s young and attractive model line-up is expected to further develop sales in the second half of the year.
“The BMW Group is currently on course to meet its guidance for the full year. We accomplished this despite deterioration in the situation in Europe, and Western European markets in particular.
“This demonstrates our strength. We continue to profit from our robust strategic alignment, our strong premium brands and our undisputed position as an innovation leader.”
U.S. Sales July 2013
Along with Q2 results, BMW has also release sales data for July. BMW sold 1,346 motorcycles in the United States, up 31.1% over the same month in 2012. The new water-cooled R1200GS led the way, with 201 units sold during the month. In total, 501 R-Series boxer models and 234 units in the K-Series were sold in July 2013. F-Series models, such as the F800GT and F800GS Adventure, were also among the popular models in the states.
Sales in the United States through July 30, 2013 are up 21.3% compared to the same period last year.
