BMW Q1 2014: Sales & Revenue Up

Tuesday, May 6, 2014
BMW Motorrad has announced its best first-quarter sales and earnings in company history with the release of its 2014 Q1 financials. On the sales side, 28,719 units were delivered worldwide through the first three months of the year, an increase of 16.1% compared to the same period in 2013. Revenues totaled 472 million Euros, an 8.3% increase over Q1 2013, while profit before tax came in at 63 million Euros, up 26%.

According to the Q1 statement, a mild European winter contributed greatly to the record numbers, allowing for an early start to the motorcycling season. Gains in Germany, where sales improved by 11.3%, Italy (up 17.8%) and France (up 21.7%) support the claim. Sales in the United States were positive as well, with 3397 units delivered, marking a gain of 4.2% compared to Q1 2013.

New models released in March 2014, such as the R nineT, S1000R, R1200RT, R1200GS Adventure and K1600GTL helped to spur growth in Q1. As reported on April 8, 2014, BMW notched its best monthly sales figures ever during the final month of Q1 in 2014.

Forecasts for the remainder of the year indicate that BMW expects “US and German markets to consolidate at their 2013 levels. Other European markets are set to show a slight upward trend.” By the end of 2014 the Bavarian marque predicts it will top its record 2013 figures, helped by the new model line and the forthcoming C evolution electric scooter, which is set to arrive in dealerships May 2014.

In the United States, at least, BMW continues to improve its sales at the outset of Q2 with April 2014 numbers showing a 41.9% increase compared to the same month in 2013. The new R1200GS Adventure was the top-seller, with 297 of the total 1571 units delivered, followed by the R1200RT and R1200GS each selling 208 units apiece. BMW sales are up 17.4% in the US through the first four months of the year.
