BMW Motorrad has approved the Dunlop Roadsmart tires for use on all R 1200 RT-P police motors operated in the USA. The new Roadsmart is a premium radial tire designed to provide longer tire life and, ultimately, lower operating costs for high-performance motorcycles. The multi-compound rear tire incorporates a long-wearing compound in the center of the tire tread and a lateral-grip compound on each shoulder to maximize cornering performance and provide unparalleled grip and feel.

“Operating costs for police motors are a major issue for most agencies,” observed Frank Stevens, Authority Program Manager, BMW Motorrad USA. “As we know from large fleet reports, tires are the single most expensive maintenance item on a police motor, not only due to normal tire life, but due to the high number of flat tires agencies encounter from officers riding on the shoulders and break-down lanes. The Dunlop Roadsmart tires should help control operating costs due to the fact that they are not only designed to last longer, but also are priced very competitively by BMW.”

Dunlop Roadsmart tires:

* pass the California Highway Patrol run-flat protocol
* are approved for use with the calibrated police speedometer
* incorporate a tread pattern featuring Dunlop’s consecant-curve design and wear evenly over the life of the tire
* feature deep, long lateral grooves to evacuate maximum amounts of water in both straight-line and cornering conditions
* have micro-sized carbon particles to improve dry grip under acceleration and a special silica additive to improve wet grip
* feature a qualifier-like profile to ensure maximum contact area when cornering
* feature Dunlop’s Jointless Band (JLB) continuously wound tread belt to ensure consistent tire diameter in all operating conditions.

Roadsmart tires are designed to be installed in pairs and should not be combined with any other tires (including the D220 tires).

BMW police motorcycles are currently used by more than 400 agencies throughout the United States, including the State of Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, the LAPD and the Honolulu PD to name a few. The motorcycles have 6,000-mile service intervals and a 39-month/60,000-mile limited warranty. BMW also offers free rider training to assist officers in obtaining the maximum benefits from riding a BMW police motorcycle.

Paul - Randy - It's different in the UK  June 12, 2009 05:02 AM
In the UK, we are losing experienced motorcycle traffic officers to automated speed enforcement (mainly cameras) and re-deployment to general duties (behind a desk). This sucks because cameras will never catch the kind of idiot who slows for cameras because it costs not to, but otherwise ignores the safety of other road users. In my personal experience, cameras cause 'accidents' (incompetence) but so long as that was at the posted limit nobodey can die/never walk again, right? In short, we want our bike cops back, because the alternative is much worse for bikers. They actually play a positive role for riders here because they take part in the DoT and police service safety initiatives by passing on real world skills to anybody who wants to know. If you had 20+ years service to look forward to, you would want to be expert in your trade too. Not getting killed has been an effective motivation for the UK bike cops to be amongst the best in the world. We need all the help we can get on the highway.

seriously is this being brought up all over again?
Randy - I hope they separate and explode  June 11, 2009 09:20 PM
Bike cops are the epitomy and poster child of what's wrong with our government. Their existence stands solely for dishonorable and corrupt revenue generating activity. I stay away from them as I would any criminal. They provide absolute zero value to society and yet we have to involuntarily fund their revenue generating activities. They should be in jail for extortion....
