Ducati Expands Presence in India

Friday, December 18, 2009
MotoGP rider Nicky Hayden joined Ducati execs for the opening of Ducati’s second showroom in India.
Located in the Gurgaon district of Delhi, the new showroom follows the first in Mumbai - Ducati having sealed an agreement with Precision Motor India Private Limited and Radiant Motorcycles to distribute its exotic Italian Twins in the second-most-populated country in the world.

Making the trip during MotoGP’s offseason break, the Kentucky Kid met with journalists alongside Ashish Chordia, CEO of Precision Motor India Private Limited, and Mirko Bordiga, CEO of Ducati Asia Pacific. Hayden had this to say of the opening:

“This event has made me understand the great strategic importance of a market such as India. Its [sic] great potential and above all, how well Ducati and MotoGP is known, appreciated and how the company is capable of attracting passionate fans, both from a commercial and sporting point of view. I am happy that there is such great interest in us and such anticipation ahead of next season. Last year, after a difficult start, we made continuous improvement towards the end and after the Valencia tests I am very excited for next year and can’t wait to get back on my Ducati.”

“The Ducati brand symbolizes racing success and passion,” said Precision Motor’s Chordia, “and we couldn’t have a better testimonial than Nicky’s to reinforce this perception. With the opening of Gurgaon showroom Ducati is now able to reach its customers in both the key markets – Delhi and Mumbai – where we will provide the best level of Sales and After Sales Service available in the market.”

The immense potential offered by the Indian market has prompted the Italian brand to invest its dealer network. By opening of the second showroom in Delhi, Ducati secures a toehold in the two most populous cities in India, each well over 10 million. The two metropolitan areas are also the wealthiest and home to some of the most likely candidates for the sheik two-wheeled Italian luxury.

Consider the recent 2009 motorcycle sales figure of 7.9 million units sold from January to August (tabulated by Honda in the release for its new CB Twister). The overwhelming majority of those sales are for low cost, Asian-built small-displacement rides; however, the market for luxury vehicles rises as India’s emerging economy develops at a rapid clip. Ducati’s expansion follows the news of Harley-Davidson’s entry to the Indian market in spite of import tariffs that jack up the price to nearly double its state-side MSRPs.
