Riding CRF450R Dirt Bikes with Kendall Norman

Monday, January 30, 2012
This weekend I ventured off to Santa Barbara, California to do a Chad Reed-style training camp which basically entailed riding the heck out of dirt and push bikes at and around Zaca Station. To my surprise, Sunday, off-road racing ace and Baja 1000 champ Kendall Norman showed up to put in some saddle time. Afterwards he invited me to do “Moto 2” at his friend’s nearby ranch. The ranch features a narrow track with sand so fine that it feels like your riding in Baby Power. There’s also acres upon acres of skinny single track that weaves between a range of terrain including manzanita trees, rocks, sand, loose dirt, and sandstone. Even better are the breathtaking views of central California atop of the hills. Having not ridden off-road much lately I forgot how dang fun it is to mob your dirt bike through trees and up and down the hillside. And as Kendall said, riding off-road makes you a better overall rider due to its unique demands including balance, clutch/throttle work and of course body position. On a side note, Kendall is still working on putting together a fresh deal for ’12 after parting ways in December with the JCR Honda team. Not only does Norman have mad skills, he’s one of the nicest professional racers I’ve ever met. Find out what he’s up to by visiting his Twitter page at http://twitter.com/kendall_norman.
