People ask me all of the time, “what kind of bike should I buy?” And the answer is always, ‘well where do you like to ride?’ And if you’re into riding moto you’d be hard pressed to find a better motorcycle than Suzuki’s RM-Z450.

I was so enamored by the ‘12 version’s sharp handling, rider-friendly powerband, not to mention its precise-feeling transmission that I purchased one for myself. (Find out more in the 2012 Suzuki RM-Z450 Project Bike article). I bought it used and the previous owner rode it pretty hard. Although the stock graphics are intact and the plastics are still shiny, a closer look reveals tell tale signs of serious wear: Scrapes on the underside of the frame, a bent front rim, and puffs of blue smoke from the muffler when first started prove that it needs some TLC.

Unfortunately it didn’t have an hour meter so who knows how much time is on the engine but hey, there’s nothing I love more than building a good ol’ project bike. Over the next few weeks I’ll be fixing it up and customizing it in hopes of making it an even better machine than it was new. I’m also going to keep track of how much cash I drop on it to determine if it’s worthwhile to buy used or brand-new.

I think it would be cool to hear more about the bikes that MCUSA contributors actually choose to own. Frank Melling's series about his Vstrom has been interesting as well. When considering a bike purchase it's more useful to know what the whole ownership experience is like rather than just rankings in a comparison. Good luck with the project!

Hi Greg, I paid $5000 for the motorcycle so I am in a little higher than the price you listed but hopefully I won't go over the price of a new one because that will just be plain silly :p

Well, this should be interesting. Please include your purchase price. Seeing that a new 450 MX bike is costing north of $8k these days, and a decent 2012 RMZ450 can be had for around $3.5k - you get about $4.5k to play with in order to end up with a *perfect* 2 year old machine. Most of us end up dropping the pursuit of perfection, and settle for good-enough, with a little money left over to - you know, to feed the family and stuff.
