Cure for Competition Blues – Racing with REM
Monday, August 5, 2013
This past Saturday I paid a visit to SoCal’s Glen Helen Raceway. But rather than spin laps aimlessly on the main track (well, I ended up doing that too— between my motos, and it was awesomely fun) I paid the extra $40 and raced with the REM Saturday Motocross club
. Having not competed in any form or motorcycle racing in what felt like forever, I had the itch to line up on the gate and mix it up with other like-minded riders. Thank God I did because I forgot how much fun racing dirt bikes is. It’s quite literally a refreshing change of pace from open riding and gives you the opportunity to push yourself and see what kind of condition your in both physically and mentally. As usual the REM course was super rough, and a little extra technical than usual, but still a fun yet challenging layout no doubt. The cool thing about REM is that there is a class for whatever dirt bike you ride, and while competitive, no one is out for blood like they are at some other amateur races. Because REM hosts races nearly every Saturday, its got the schedule down pat and you’re usually out of there as early as 2 pm so you have the rest of the day to celebrate a victory or pound sand in defeat. If you’ve ever got the competition bug a Saturday visit to REM might be the cure.
