2010 Yamaha YZ450F Review

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Waheed is harnessing the power of James Stewart No. 7 right now, getting ready to fly around Budds Creek aboard the 2010 Yamaha YZ450F.
Greetings powersport enthusiasts, this is your virtual motorcycling pal Adam writing. We’re on the eve of riding the 2010 Yamaha YZ450F motocross machine. Yamaha has chosen Budds Creek, a national level AMA Motocross racing track in southern Maryland as the venue of choice for its newest and most high performance off-road motorcycle.

If you haven’t already read our 2010 Yamaha YZ450F First Look article, then you’ll be surprised to find out that the new YZ450F incorporates new features and reengineered components that we’ve never seen on a mass produced motocross bike. There’s no doubt Yamaha has taken a significant risk by going against the status quo and moving components like the engine, airbox and rear suspension. But did they get it right?

If there were one company capable of pulling it off it would be Yamaha. They’ve been down this road before, most notably with its original 4-stroke motocross bike, the YZ400F. This bike went on to be the platform which all Japanese manufactures based its 450cc off-road racing bikes off of.

Even more recent is Yamaha’s technological push with the 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1 sportbike. Although it isn’t the most high performance 1000cc sportbike made, it is gradually making waves within the sportbike community due to its unique engine firing order and proprietary throttle electronics which make the bike perform like nothing else on the market. Will the new $7990 YZ450F follow suit? You'll find out on Monday. In the meantime, go ahead and fire off any questions you have in regards to what it’s like to ride the new machine and I’ll do my best to get them answered. Braaaaap!

J.Lam -heads up = idiot -5 valve head was a gimmick November 24, 2009 10:02 AM
I don't know why this guy thinks the 5 valve head was so great. People on the Yamaha race team admit that it was a sales gimmick. Now that they have the reverse motor gimmick (thats a lie, i think the new design has lots of advantages, but like Tim said, nothing new) they where able to get rid of the 5 valve head.

to little timmy b., the 5 valve head is what has made that engine the most reliable, high pref. 4 stroke in the world. by a mile! you would know that if you weren't a trail riding goon.
Tim B -Blu nation - I agree September 25, 2009 09:17 AM
This "reversed" motor has been done before, notably by Cannondale a few years ago. And Husaberg leaned their cylinder before Yamaha did. I would be surprised if somebody hadn't tried it before Husaberg. So Yamaha is just copying ideas from others and giving them their own slant. This is nothing ground breaking here. Let's give credit where credit is due with this bike and most of that credit does NOT belong to Yamaha. At least they got rid of the 5-valve head gimmick.
clarkjw -I'm so amped for this bike! September 24, 2009 11:42 AM
Is the offset crank being used in any other Yamaha bike (including the M1?
If not, WHY?!
Chance for extended range with larger undeseat tank option?
MPG?
What's the rim size?
Any chance yam puts this engine in other bikes?
Dyno shot of the torque curve please!
I love this site!

I want Yamaha to make a WR450X. With this new set up it'll make a great road/track bike. All it needs is the fork and swing arm from a R6. Put on a 180 rear tire and some good dunlops. It could be the base for the new Formula450 class. Supermoto bike during the week. Something fun to ride to work. Then throw on some fairings and have a blast around your local track on the weekends. Sounds great to me.
Blu nation -Whats the big deal? September 24, 2009 08:57 AM
I think its cool that Yamaha gave this new design a shot and is bringing it to the mainstream. But didnt Cannondale/Can-Am do the same thing with their cylinder a few years back? My buddy new a guy who had one and that version seemed better in theory than actuality. It will be interesting to see what the press thinks.
