Bright Lights, Big City
Sunday, January 4, 2009
The bright lights of Supercross returned to the big city confines of Southern California--kicking off the 2009 season. Every year it feels kind of like déjà vu; cool temperatures, sporadic rain, and tens of thousands of eager fans. It’s a celebration of sorts, commencing another year of two-wheeled motorsports. And although watching Supercross racing really isn’t my thing. It’s always nice to visit with friends, have some laughs and aimlessly wonder about the scene. That is until tonight’s main event got underway.
Bright lights meet the big city at Angels stadium in Anaheim, California, kicking off another year of AMA Supercross racing.
When the gates dropped it looked like it was going to be a runaway performance by perennial favorite and Yamaha pilot, James Stewart. Soon enough though, last year’s champ and Suzuki rider, Chad Reed caught up and past Stewart. Both riders battled closely for the next few laps with Reed eventually clipping the back tire of Stewart while they blasted through the whoops. The accident forced an angry Stewart out of the race thereby adding a new element of thrill for what is sure to become an exciting season.
More last minute drama unfolded when race leader, Josh Grant caught a tuff block, jamming his rear wheel and almost causing him to crash. With only a few laps separating him from an inaugural race win and a rapidly closing Chad Reed, Grant managed to hold Reed off and take his first career win.
With racing action like this, maybe Supercross racing might start becoming ‘my thing’.
