Mat Mladin Talks Mental Fortitude – Must See!

Thursday, January 21, 2010
In this OnTheThrottleTV episode, retired AMA Superbike Champ, Mat Mladin talks about mental fortitude and what separates good motorbike racers from great motorbike racers. Specifically, Mladin chimes in on Ben Bostrom’s lackluster career (no offense Benny-boy) during the 4:20-second mark. Make sure to watch it! Crazy! Also peep this Mladin quote: “I don’t care for acquaintances. I have friends or I have enemies and there ain’t nothing in the middle.” Well said MM! Classic!

Winning little pieces of plastic and metal to put on your mantle does not earn you respect, it is how you treat others. Take your bike and go home.

Met Mladin years ago when I was working as a credentialed photographer. The guy has the personality of a shoebox IN PUBLIC but he rides the hell out of a bike each and every time. So why do people feel this need to identify or empathize with an athlete? Charles Barkley said it best (see quote). Whether or not the guy is a good person (or even a mentally stable one...) is irrelevant. He has a job. I'm sick of this NASCAR mentality that we need to get to know and feel some kind of bond with a racer. Appreciate how well he does his job and leave the rest for the tabloids.

Mat just honestly tells it like it is to him. Some might see the racing as a playground, but not Mat. He took a lot of the fun out of his racing opponents if they wanted to win, but that's just the way he functions.

Only Ben Spies could beat him enough to win titles too. There's no doubt in my mind if it wasn't for Mat, Ben now wouldn't be the successfull racer he is. If Ben wanted to win he had to beat Mat's methodology some way that worked for him....and he did.

Keep the Zoloft W1llPOWER, when you are at the top you have very little friends, only people trying to knock you down. Matt was a great racer and always on the edge. Due to his willingness to speak up for rider safety, unfair rules and all the other crap AMA/DMG threw at him he still managed to become a champion manny times over.

Bring on the next outspoken, weird, focused, crazy maniac rider and watch him kick ass.

Mullett Mladin was the best Superbike racer of all time in the AMA. I used to dislike him in the early to mid 2000's , but gained a huge amount of respect for him later on. He will be missed in American racing. He is all business when it comes to racing. He doesn't go partying or have fashion lines, he strictly raced amd kick ass doing it.

What I don't think that Mladin understands is that being the best racer isn't about just winning races. Fans follow the personality of their favorite racers not just how many wins. I will not miss Mladin; he's a guy who complained about everything and quit when things didn't go his way. Give me a Bostrom or Zemke to watch anyday, even if they run mid pack.

Maybe had Mat been a more personable guy, the AMA wouldn't have given him that bullshit penalty that cost him the title a couple years back. But he chose to be the way he was, and now he has to live with the results -- seven AMA superbike titles and a whole bunch of people who think he's an asshole.

I respect Mat's dedication to get everything outof his career but dude get some ZOLOFT..if you need to motivate yourself your entire career by adopting his attitde, you have a persoality disorder...
