Sunday Morning Notes from Laguna Seca
Sunday, July 25, 2010
It is race day today at Laguna Seca.
It’s only 9:00 a.m. as I am type this and the track is already starting to fill-up with race fans. In fact, I can’t believe how many people have already shown up despite the cool and generally gloomy conditions that have engulfed the circuit this morning. But just like the last two days here the sun will peak out and temps will start heating up within the next hour or two. So bring sunblock and a hat.
If you’re still planning on making it to the races today your best bet is to come on a motorcycle. Traffic entering the track is already mayhem and I would expect it to remain the same for the most of the day. There are also a lot of cops posted up in sneaky spots on the side of the road so make sure to watch your speed and don’t slice through traffic on the right side of the lane because they will most definitely give you a ticket.
Many of the teams will be wearing special livery for today’s race. Jorge Lorenzo’s special Dainese leathers have been lost in transit so he’ll be wearing his usual set. I guess even factory riders aren’t above losing their gear during their travels.
There are three big race going down today. We have Daytona Sportbike kicking off just past 10 a.m. followed by the 32-lap MotoGP race at 2 p.m. The AMA Superbike race starts after that. Overnight the Yoshimura crew repaired the first gear in our MotoUSA project GSX-R1000, but the Superbike warm-up was cancelled this a.m. due to fog. Atlas will test it on the warm-up lap and if it works he’s going to race if it doesn’t we’ll try again at a later round. That’s all for now, it’s bike racing time!
