California is The True Mecca of Motorcycling

Tuesday, March 10, 2009
We sure have it good in California. That’s what I keep thinking every time I’m on the pavement here in Daytona Beach, Florida. It’s crazy, but after riding around for the last few days during this year’s Daytona Bike Week I forgot just how good we have it over on the lower left coast.

What I miss most is the ability to zip in between traffic. Forget the notion of having to wait behind the yahoos in front of you. In California you simply zoom past or in between them courtesy of its lane-splitting law. It’s almost too good to be true.

I also miss the assortment of roads that the Golden state has to offer. We’ve got it all: Roads carved through mountains, hills and valleys; desolate straightaways that stretch as far as you can see; there’s even urban moto action downtown, if that happens to be your thing. In California there’s always a road that’s perfect for you and the way you like to ride.

We’ve also got arguably the best weather in the world. Sunshine and mild weather, most of the time anyways. Ride towards the beach or in the mountains and you’ll be treated to cool comfortable temps. Like it hot? Simply head east until you can’t take the heat anymore. Our temperate weather allows us to ride almost 365-days a year.
Forward thinking traffic rules, amazing roads, and awesome weather? Simply put, if you live in the United States, California is the true Mecca of motorcycling.

Well I live in North Carolina which is the mecca of motorcycling. Two hours of beautiful riding to the Tail of the Dragon ( 318 curves in 11 miles no driveways intersections just road.) Blue Ridge Parkway, Smokey Mountains. We have any kind of riding you want to do in the Western part of the state. I do not envy anybody about where they ride for I am in motorcycle heaven here.
Former CA guy.... now FL guy - lane-sharing  March 13, 2009 01:22 PM
It's not lane-splitting but lane-sharing. The CA code states it's not illegal to share a lane.

the variety of roads are offset by the amount of traffic they all carry.

Jeeez, don't say that too loud or California's corrupt State government will figure out a way to put a huge tax on lane splitting, fun twisty roads and sunshine. It's true there's good riding and great weather here, but road maintenence is non-existant despite the highest taxes out of 50 states, thrust upon its weary citizens ( BTW they just raised them again! Got to give those illegal Aliens free college you'know!)

yeah, floridia pretty much sucks for riding. especially as you go farther south. it's all flat, straight, hot and no trails either for off-road. I hear some bad things about cali tho. mostly off-road stuff and emissions stuff. like whatsup with this green/red sticker crap you guys have to deal with? and some bikes aren't legal in california, or they're heavier and more restricted to pass carb laws. i wish we had lane splitting here in florida. you'd think we would, with the temps your bike can hit standing in traffic.
