Buell Typhon 1190 Street Fighter First Look

Tuesday, November 30, 2010
A new Buell motorcycle has made its debut, with the Pegasus Race Team unveiling the Typhon 1190. The prototype is a stripped down version of the Erik Buell Racing 1190RR superbike, which the German racing team successfully campaigned on European circuits.
Buell Typhon 1190
The Buell Typhon 1190 is a naked version of the Erik Buell Racing 1190RR superbike, as envisioned by the German-based Pegasus Race Team and Gruner Engineering.

Long associated with Buell, the Pegasus team claimed the 2010 Sound of Thunder Championship with rider Harald Kitsch riding the 1190RR. The Typhon 1190 was created together with fellow German firm, Gruner Engineering, with the concept model making its debut at the Essen Motor Show (Nov 27 – Dec 5).

The Typhon is an interesting break from the last Buell Streetfighter, the 1125CR. Where the CR hid its radiator under attention grabbing air scoops, the Typhon flaunts its water-cooled heart, this naked more fully exposed. The Typhon also sources a very XB-like cowling and dual headlamps.

Powering the new Buell is the same 1190cc Twin (106mm bore x 67.5mm stroke) as the Superbike racer, presumably along with its claimed 185 rear-wheel horsepower.

The Typhon goes on to prove that H-D may have killed Buell Motorcycles Inc, but it didn’t kill Buell motorcycles. The brand has resurrected under the Erik Buell Racing moniker, and its eponymous founder who refuses to yield his American Sportbike dream. Buell announced a 2011 production version of the 1190 superbike, dubbed the EBR 1190RS, in September (Buell Back in Business). The company founder also voiced his approval of the Pegasus take on an 1190 naked.

Said Erik Buell of the 1190 Typhon in the Team Pegasus press announcement: "EBR is working intensely right now on getting the new 1190RS Superbike model ready for production, which is consuming all our resources. We had been talking with our friends at Pegasus about our plans for a streetfighter model that would follow the 1190RS, and mentioning we could not work on it at this time.

Pegasus asked if they could build a concept model to show, so we sent many CAD models over for them and our friends at Gruner to use to speed up the design process. They did a great job in a very short time!"

x2468 - It only needs one disc because it is ZTL. 185rwhp is reasonable. That is what the old 990 Desmosidici RR had, and even the new 1098R. So does the 1000cc BMW S1000RR. The facts are the race bike being used does make 185rwhp. Maybe they will keep that maybe they will detune it to 175rwhp. Who knows right now. What we know is 185rwhp is possible and even 175rwhp is enough to compete with everyone else, especially with only 255-275lbs to move and the lowest CG in the class.
donny -seat ergonomics  December 26, 2010 04:17 PM
This bike looks great. I was wondering if he will have a model with "seat ergonomics". For riders and passengers like the XB12SS. I no guys that tour with a passenger with there XB12SS with a" long sport seat ". I was hoping for a similar set up with one of the new buell bikes. I will keep my fingers crossed . I see this bike and wonder what in gods name Harley Davidson is thinking. Harley Davidson dose not even make retro cruisers there customers really won't. I em confused a little crazy ,but i can still ride. If Harley likes to make coin they should follow triumph and make retro Harley Davidson and Buell bikes, but what do i no .
x2468 -I hope...  December 14, 2010 10:18 PM
I hope that if it has 185rwhp it has more than one disk brake up front...
x2468 -well...  December 14, 2010 10:14 PM
TG, while I agree that 185hp is a bit lofty, I don't believe that it's as impossible as your logic would like to suggest. First of all, I don't think that you can argue that a 1200cc 4-stroke twin can't make 185hp simply because an 800cc 2-stroke twin by the same company, for a completely different purpose, can only make 155hp. One reason being because a sled needs to make torque and have tractability in powdery snow so it's not all about peak hp. I'm sure the 800 2-stroke could be making a lot more if it was tuned like a 125GP bike. That being said, the inline 4's with 1000cc have been able to reach 185 rwhp. I don't think it's impossible for a 1200cc twin to do the same. I'm not a physicist (maybe one can chime in?) so I don't know if the piston speeds of a twin of that size would be beyond feasible with todays materials or technology. Maybe it is maybe it isn't. Now,does Rotax have the ability to do such a thing? Maybe. They have a great deal of engine building experience, although, of course, no where near the most. Yeah the likelihood that this bike will make 185 rwhp isn't extremely high but I wouldn't say it's drastically out of reach. I guess the only way to know would be if a physicist and someone who specializes in the strength of materials could come on and tell us if a naturally aspirated 1200cc twin at sea level and on pump gas could mathematically achieve 185rwhp for a practical amount of time.
TG -I'm with Neil  December 10, 2010 12:51 PM
185hp seems Really optimistic. Maybe on a one season race motor. Not on a reliable street bike. At 200hp (at the crank) and 1.2 liters, it would make an efficiency of 167hp/liter. The Two-Stroke, direct-injected, 800 E-Tec Rotax makes for Ski-Doo is about 155hp (at the crank) per 0.8 liters = 194hp/liter. Sorry, but a direct injected two stroke is inherently going to have significantly higher efficency than a four stroke v twin, more than 30hp/liter (or 15%) more. It's just unrealistic. Would it be cool as hell? Yes. Is it realistic? No.
Neil -pffff...  December 7, 2010 10:53 AM
yeah right... 185 rear-wheel horsepower...

and the moon is a ripe stilton!
Kevin -Go EBR!  December 5, 2010 11:41 AM
Finally, Eric Buell can build the bike he has always tried to. Harley can no longer hold back his development so he will surely build a killer bike. And it already shows, instead of the mere 140hp before it now has about 200hp(185rwhp). Another website said this bike weighs 355lbs. That is incredible. I expect a street/production version to gain another 20lbs but that is still great. Eric Buell will make his comeback.
Skipper -Real nice looking bike  December 2, 2010 01:41 PM
I really do not understand why Eric went with Harley in the first place. They were using a old heavy outdated motor that has no future and trying to sell the bikes thru Harley dealerships. Who in the hell wants to go into a Harley dealership?
Jim -Congratulations  December 2, 2010 12:30 PM
That is awesome...can't wait for the RS, and it is a bike I would consider buying. I really think the separation from Harley will benefit Buell in the long run...not of the bogus styling restrictions and mechanical limitations. So glad to see they are bouncing back quickly, and I am looking forward to seeing what we can buy.
Chessie -I knew it....  December 2, 2010 11:23 AM
I knew Eric had something "up his sleeve" for this move. He's a man whose ideas has come, and he has some of the brightest minds working on his innovative design team. All those people who said HD messed up Eric Buell...well all I can say is they did him a favor....ride on Eric Buell and team!
John Z1000 -Harley sux  December 1, 2010 05:39 PM
Now that Buell has nothing to do with Harley I would buy one!!! A strong motor, way nicer looking than the 1125 and no affiliation with an outdated motorcycle company. EBR could become huge! Guys like me who love sport bikes but hate Harley will surely support Eric and Harley guys don't ride sport bikes, so keep up the good work!
Scoot -I take one  December 1, 2010 02:04 PM
WOW - I want one now.....and it doesn't have the Harley boat anchor motor either. As long as Buell is not associated with Harley I would be interested in buying one. Over the years I would check into the possibility of buying a Buell but the moron Harley dealers gave me the bums rush when they found out I was not interested in buying one of there land barges. I did not fit the picture of the standard Harley buyer as I do not wear a Village People outfit and I do not have any tattoos or a pony tail.
Dennis -High hopes.  December 1, 2010 09:48 AM
I always found Eric Buells enthusiasm to be infectious and I really admired his spirit. Whenever I listened to him talk about his products I couldn't help but want to go out and buy one. Unfortunately of the many Buells that I was able to test ride(almost every one of the Buell line), the bikes just didn't measure up to his dream. They were fun for a ride, but I wasn't sure about owning one. They did improve over the years and the last bike was the best. It was a sad day when Harley killed the Buell brand. They shouldn't have done this as I'm sure there was another company out there that could have done something with the product. Buell had a newer, better bike about to come out. It may have lead to something. Maybe this is it? I'm hopeful that Buell is coming back. I'd really like to buy one of Mr. Buells bikes.
Brian -The Phoenix rises again  December 1, 2010 05:44 AM
It was pretty sorry the way Harley treated Buell, their link to the future. But I think this departure will prove to be beneficial for Buell, this photo being evidence. As a Buell owner I can say the bikes handle great and with the Rotax partnership now they have a competitive engine. I'd love to see a Rotax powered Uly XT type bike in the future. I love my Uly XT but the Rotax would be direct competition to the C14 and FJR. The Baracuda project was a good looking bike, as is this one. Buell has never lacked "attitude" in their bike designs. The German group has followed suit. Good luck to Erik. When will we have stock options? There are plenty of owners who would support Buell.
Vince XB -sick nasty  December 1, 2010 04:48 AM
What an amazing looking naked. All the nasty, grittiness of the XB strapped onto 185hp. Dude, they won't be able to build them fast enough!
Mick -That's sexy  November 30, 2010 08:15 PM
I want one now!
Fred -Damn thats Slick  November 30, 2010 07:20 PM
That thing just looks amazing and it probably can handle incredibly well, plus it has 1190cc. This thing will be sick
Jay -Wow  November 30, 2010 07:09 PM
That bike is frikn sik. 185RWHP sign me up. I think Victory should endorse and sell BUELL Motorcycles. Just use Vic for parts and dealer locations. What a blow to Harley that would be. Victory street bikes are already bettter top that with a BA sportbike and naked sportbike.
